Family sends thanks to caring community for response to article

About: "Illness, family fire puts young family in need of help"

To the Columbia-Adair County Community:

On behalf of Donnie and Denise Richards, I would like to thank this wonderful community for the response to this article.

Within two or three hours of the article being posted, calls started coming in. In that short amount of time, people have donated a washer and dryer, living room suit, clothes for the little girl, and money.

Words cannot express the gratitude and sincere appreciation that Donnie and Denise as well as the rest of their family have for the selfless giving and outreach of the people of this community. The fine folks at the Columbia Church of the Nazarene where Donnie and Denise attend have also given so unselfishly. They have helped in a countless number of ways to get this family back on their feet.

This church has shown the love of Christ by being a living example of compassion and caring. Thanks again to everyone in the community who has done so much to help this family in their time of need.

s/Kelly Crawhorn

GBBC: At 11:00amCT, Columbia closing in on Top Ten in Nation!

This is urgent: Adair County simply must not let Columbia be beaten by a town named for a bicycle, even if it is the seat of Wake County, North Carolina! -CM

By Barbara Armitage, AC Garden Club

We are closing the gap! Adair Countians are really coming through with Great Backyard Bird counts. Columbia is at 109 reports submitted --we are right on the heels of Raleigh, NC, with 112 reports submitted. If we can push just a bit more we will be in 10th place nationally.

I just wanted to be Number 1 in Kentucky now it looks like we have a great chance of making the top 10 list for the nation. My thanks to everyone who has contributed to this effort. We still have hours to go so try to find the time to do at least one more count before the end of the day.

Call Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 for help with submitting your checklists; or call Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce at (270) 384-6020 or the Adair County Public Library at (270) 384-2472 or visit the library to use the internet to upload your lists. By Kelli Bonifer

If you worked full-time or part-time during 2008, and you had low to moderate income, you may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). You may also receive the Child Tax Credit (CTC) if you had children living with you for at least half of the year.

If you qualify you owe less in taxes and you may get cash back. Also, some people who don't owe taxes can get the Earned Income Tax Credit. However, to get these credits, you must file a tax return.

Letter: GBBC gives insight into birds' ecosystems

About: A comment on the count for ColumbiaAdair County

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

While at first glance this idea would appear to be a good idea if one were doing a census for the population of people. The problem being that people are not affected by the same diseases and climate changes as birds are. If a human or person doesn't like the weather where they live, they can generally just pack up and move.
