Reluctantly, CM changes Downey to Downy woodpecker

Re: Barbara Armitages photo of Downey (Downy) Woodpecker

Ed,

Is the woodpecker in Barbara Armitage's photo related to the Adair County Downeys? Or is he just a regular old downy woodpecker?

I couldn't resist this...

s/Ann
of Adair (& California)
Thanks. Ornithologically speaking, and out of respect for the memories of Ms. Frances Russell and Ms. Mary Richards, the spelling is changed to "Downy," though it ort to be "Downey" as in the name of the outstanding Adair County family whose name is synonomous with the timber industry. Our thanks to Ann of Adair and all the other dozens of CM volunteer proofreaders who help keep the record and the spelling straight.

Letter: Scary Tree on TRAYLOR, not Trailer, Hill

About: Scary Tree

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Since it (Traylor Hill) is named after my grandfather and my uncle, the late J.P. Traylor and Noah C. Traylor, respectively, it is TRAYLOR Hill, not Trailer Hill.

s/Mike Akin

Thanks, Mike Akin, for prompting the correction, which is now made. Which brings to mind two of the most famous Traylors, Melvin Alvah Traylor, born at Breeding, KY, and who was the Illinois favorite son choice for the Democratic nomination for President in 1932; and fittingly during the Great Backyard Bird Count, his son, Melvin Alvha Traylor, Jr. an American ornithologist who died one year ago, on February 11, 2008.

Lt. Gov. Mongiardo pays respect Andrew Reichwein, a Connexus Energy employee who lost his life helping Western Kentucky recover from storm

From Commonwealth News Center

Yesterday, Lieutenant Governor Mongiardo travelled to Western Kentucky to pay his respects to an individual who lost his life helping the Paducah community recover in the aftermath of last week's winter storm.

Andrew "Andy" Reichwein, an employee of Connexus Energy from Ramsey, Minnesota, arrived in Paducah early Tuesday morning to help the Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation with power restoration efforts. While working 30 feet above the ground restoring electrical lines, the pole on which Reichwein was working snapped, resulting in his tragic death.
