Letter: Thinks higher taxes means less use not absolutely true Response to: "Higher tax means less smoking, better health, writer says: To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Let me first say that I feel sorry for anyone who has lost a loved one due to tobacco use or for any reason. However since the Surgeon General made it mandatory to put warning labels on tobacco products as well as an age limit on buyers, everyone knows using tobacco could be very harmful. I am not a lobbyist for people to use tobacco. I have two young children and I hope that they will not use tobacco. To say that higher taxes mean less smoking is not absolutely true. With an estimated 30% of cigarettes sold in Kentucky coming from out of state buyers and Kentucky having the 4th lowest tax in the nation, I think you can see the direct link. Also internet sales of cigarettes is estimated to be in the billions of dollars. So to me higher taxes may not be the answer people are looking for to get people to stop using tobacco and definitely not the answer for new revenue. Oh, and by the way--NBC has a reality show on primetime television full of people who eat candy "once in a while". It is called the "Biggest Loser." s/Scotty Carter 2009-02-06 17:25:23 | Comments | Printable version

Thinks Fat Bird is a Northern Mockingbird Get Ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count Starting Friday, February 13 and running through Monday, February 16, 2009 About: "Fat bird watching sunset" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Given the body size, color of the eyes, and the beak color, along with the size, I believe this to be a Northern Mockingbird as most in these parts known as a Mockingbird. I will concede to anyone else who is willing to give a different ID on this one though. It's a tough angle, and along with the closeness of the image, it's hard to make a definitive call on this one. s/Tony Harvey 2009-02-06 17:11:04 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE/State faces two storms One is the ice storm; the other is the financial storm "I am fully committed to working with every member in a bipartisan, bicameral manner to usher Kentucky through this storm toward brighter, more prosperous days." -BAM CARNEY By State Representative Bam Carney 51st KY House District, Adair and Taylor Counties General Assembly Back to Business For February Portion of 2009 Regular Session As we reconvened the February portion of the 2009 General Assembly, one of the first orders of business was to hear Governor Steve Beshear deliver his State of the Commonwealth Address. The Governor began by mentioning the devastating ice storm that left thousands of our citizens without electricity and sheer destruction in its wake. After acknowledging and honoring the first responders who bravely came to the aid of so many Kentuckians, the Governor mentioned another storm devastating our state- the financial situation that has left us with a $456 million shortfall. Thinks those addicted will buy cigarettes regardless of price Thinks higher taxes will mean cigarettes will be bought, even if family suffers from lack of necessitiesResponse to: Smoking taxes. It's hard to watch loved one commit slow suicide To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I don't smoke. I never have and I never will. Personally, however, I believe that if the tax is raised, then those that are addicted will spend their money on the cigarettes instead of things that they need, which will in turn take away money they could be spending to save their house, their car, feed their children, or achieve a higher education. I believe whole-heartedly that raising the tax would make things worse, not better. Perhaps not worse for the county, but for the individual and the individual's family. They will be able to come up with the money to buy cigarettes if that is what they want. s/Amy Martin 2009-02-06 15:17:55 | Comments | Printable version

Time (and COPD) changes how we look at smoking In supprt of : Dwain Harris: "Higher tax means less smoking, better health" To ColumbiaMagazine.com Time changes the way we look at things. Just a couple of years ago (a very dear relative) told me that he would smoke until the day he died and no one could convince him otherwise. He understood that smoking would bring an early death for him - he would say that he had the right to die any way he choose. Soon after that he was diagnosed with COPD and now lung cancer. Today he is clinging tightly to what's left of his life. Trying to stay alive he has undergone what could only be termed as torture just to try to breath a few more breaths. I think (that relative) would argree that raising the cigarette tax would be a good thing if it protected even one person from what he is now enduring. s/Barbara Armitage 2009-02-06 10:39:26 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Amen to Dwain Harris comments In support of: "Higher tax means less smoking, better health" To ColumbiaMagazine.com I want to commend Dwain on his well-written support of an increased tax on tobacco. While an increased tax may be offensive to smokers, we all know that tobacco kills our loved ones. When you have watched a family member die after suffering for two years with what the surgeon diagnosed as "Camel cancer," it's difficult for me to see anything progressive or helpful in opposing a substantial tax increase on tobacco. Kentucky has the highest lung cancer death rate in the U.S., AND smoking is so costly today, it takes away from providing the basic needs of many Adair County families. Anything we can do to reduce the deaths caused by smoking is okay by me. Thanks, Dwain. I also support Scotty Carter's idea about increasing taxes on unhealthy foods and alcohol. s/Marsha Walker 2009-02-06 09:39:13 | Comments | Printable version

Higher tax means less smoking, better health, writer says ". . . we Kentuckians cling fast to the apparent conviction that since we once produced large amounts of tobacco, we should eternally protect its use. That belief will only keep setting us back while we should be moving forward." -DWAIN HARRIS Answer to: Letter Questions aim of cigarette tax increase To ColumbiaMagazine.com: The difference between candy and tobacco is that tobacco sickens and kills when used as directed. You can eat candy once in a while, but you either smoke or you don't, and when you smoke, you are much more likely to be sicker and to die younger. There is no scientific debate about this. It is fact. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2009-02-06 03:49:02 | Comments | Printable version
