Says Wish List Projects worthy, but he opposes Stimulus bill

Response to: Stimulus package Wish List County road bridge projects

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

While I agree that all of these requests are worthy projects that need to be completed in Adair County, the Stimulus Bill is absolutely the wrong place to seek funding for them.

Beshear urges shared unity, purpose to resolve budget crisis

In Governor's State of the Commonwealth address

From Commonwealth News Center

In the wake of massive, statewide recovery efforts from the devastation of last week's winter storm, Governor Steve Beshear tonight called for unity and a sense of shared purpose in tackling the state's $456 million budget shortfall in his second State of the Commonwealth address.

To combat that shortfall, Gov. Beshear urged support for a plan that includes a significant increase in the tax on tobacco products as well as another $150 million in additional spending cuts. The governor pointed out that Kentucky's tax on cigarettes is currently the fourth lowest in the nation, while the state also ranks first in the number of smoking related deaths each year, which adds hundreds of millions of dollars in health-care costs.

Feedback: Congratulations to Amy Anderson

About: Columbia KY LWC sophomore gets prestigious internship

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Congratulations to Miss Amy Anderson!

Miss Amy Anderson was one of my favorite and best pupils at Adair County High School. It was a distinct pleasure having her in German and Drama classes. She also was an excellent actress in the premiere of Sir Noel Coward's classic, "Blithe Spirit." Miss Anderson gave a commanding performance as the sublime character, Edith, in one of the classiest plays which ever graced the stage at Adair County High School!

Letter: More ID on finches in Kay Haupt photo

Kay Haupt finches at rustic feeder

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

What a marvelous picture... My thoughts are that the highest bird is a winter plumaged Goldfinch. The black wings are the key field mark. The perched bird with the red coloring is a House Finch, not a Purple Finch. Purple Finches look like they were dipped in raspberry sauce. Orange or red coloring indicates a House Finch. There is another Goldfinch peeking around the backside of the feeder. The 2 brown birds with stripped backs showing towards the camera are probably sparrows. Great looking rustic cabin feeder!

s/Jeanne Marshburn

Thanks so much. We'll add your note to the photo. -EW

Adair County prepares for the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 13-16, 2009

High on a ridge over beautiful downtown Knifley

Thanks for the report. The issue before the panel is whether Grosbeaks are fractious, unwelcome birds, as Shirley Jones' were, or whether they were pretty, nice birds, as Susie Grant's was. We're assuming the Kniflian guests were nice or you would have run them off. -MODERATOR
