Remembering Joey Hadley: Work helped dreams come true JOEY HADLEY, 43 To ColumbiaMagazine.com: When I opened the mag tonight my heart was broken. I have known Joey Hadley most of my life. But over the last year I have seen a new side of him. He has always had a smile and laughter that will not soon be forgotten but what I did not know was he was a great dad. He worked so hard for our kids. He never said no to anything and usually was one of the first to volunteer to park cars, take orders, bring a tent, move equipment, whatever he could do. Even during the year when he was so sick, he still worked hard to do for the kids and make their dreams come true. My heart goes out to the Jessica. Joey will forever be in my heart for the dedication he gave to make his daughter's and my son's dreams come true. He will be greatly missed by the all of his band family. With tears of sadness, s/Shamarie Claiborne 2009-02-01 10:01:19 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Last week's Tom Chaney essay: The Tattered Billboard by By Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com "Flickering Twilight of Gods and Empire" I became first aware of the work of Gore Vidal about the time he swum into the nation's ken as a part of the family of the new, glamorous first lady, Jackie Kennedy. Vampire piggy bank urges Finns to spend as patriotic duty Spending is patriotic? We could save ourselves into a bigger hole, some say A story in China Daily entitled "Vampire piggy bank urges Finns to spend amid recession fears" reminds us of the importance of spending money as our patriotic duty. The point of the story is that now is not the time hoard money, but to kick start the economy by spending: Start a building project, get a new hybrid car, give your money to a good cause where it will be spent, now. Just buy. The Adair County economist whose work on monetary policy and economics is light years more advanced than Friedrich Hayek or John Maynard Keynes, the late James Howard Keltner of Gradyville, advocated putting an expiration date on all currency. "Spend it or lose it," he said, "and don't let anyone redeem unused money for new." Besides, you can't take it with you. As Helen Stephens is concerned. She reminded folks at the Columbia McDonald's on Saturday, you can't take it with you, "I never saw a U-Haul behind a hearse," she said. Maybe a day is a day to remember to go shopping and eat out. For the country's sake. 2009-02-01 09:01:04 | Comments | Printable version
