Harrison Moss wants to get knife club started in Adair County

We would like to get a knife club started in Adair County. Most counties have one, and we--Harrison Moss, Matthew Moss, Willard Bryant--have attended some. People bring their knives and trade or sell or buy, and some clubs have knife auctions, and everyone has a good time. Anyone else interested should get in touch with us. Obituary: Golda Sparks Loy, 93

Mrs. Loy was a member of a prominent South Adair County family, a member of the Columbia Christian Church, and a homemaker

Golda Sparks Loy, 93, of the Loy Cemetery Road, the Fairplay Community, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 1:20amCT at her home after an illness.

The funeral service Friday, January 30, 2009, at 1:00pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, with Bro. Raymond Martin the officiating clergy. Interment will be in the Loy Cemetery in Fairplay, KY. Visitation will be after 3:30pmCT on Thursday, January 29, 2009.

Word of the death of Julia Cole Loy, 64

Columbians are deeply saddened by the word which has reached here of the death of a beloved Columbia educator, Julia Cole Loy, 64, who died today, Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY, after several weeks illness. She was the wife of Marshall Loy. Arrangements at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home are incomplete at this time. Details will be posted as soon as received.

Tpr. Gregory warns of 2 impassable roads in northern Taylor Co.

Downed trees and slickened roads make roads impassable

Kentucky State Police Post 15 are asking all drivers to avoid these areas:
  • KY Highway 289 from the Taylor/Marion county line north to the Jessietown area

  • KY Highway 0527 (Scotts Ridge Area) from Mt. Washington Baptist Church north to Raywick, KY
These roadways are impassable due to downed trees and slickened roadways. For roadway and traffic conditions please call the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet by dialing 511.

ACMS Academic team FPS wins 1st place in District Competition

Congratulations to Adair County Middle School Academic Team Future Problem Solvers: Roslin Wilson, Emmalee Baker, Abigail (Abby) Walker, and Alison Feese. This team won first place in the district competition going up against Taylor and Green Counties.

The team is coached by Mr. Brett Reliford. The team will advance to regional competition February 10, 2009, to be held at Pulaski County.

LWC night classes on regular schedule

Night classes will be held tonight on the regular schedule. The weather information that we have indicates that temperatures should be between 35 and 38 degrees during the times that classes normally meet.

Faculty, please be aware that if you have students in your classes coming from Bowling Green or areas north of Campbellsville, they may not be able to attend class due to conditions there. Please post notes and other materials you use in class this evening on Angel so that these students may have access to the information and allow them to make up missed work.

If conditions change during the evening, we will alert security and also use RaiderAid to alert you to the change. There is a possibility of more inclement weather tomorrow morning so please be sure to check radio stations, TV stations or the Web for updates. If you are not registered for RaiderAid, please do that as well.

Wendy's makes 11 smoke free restaurants in Adair County

There are now 11 smoke free restaurants in Columbia, with the addition of Wendy's of Columbia on February 1, 2009. This counts Red Barn Bar-B-Q, which is currently closed because of a fire.

The list includes: Wendy's (February 1, 2009), McDonald's of Columbia, Ol' Joe's B&B Que, Tray's Garden, Subway, LWC College Cranmer Dining Center and Subway, Red Barn Bar-B-Q (closed now because of fire), Westlake Hospital Cafe, IGA Deli, Cafe on the Square, and Buffalo HillsI hope this is a complete list, if anyone knows if there are others, please let us know at the Adair County Health Department. We provide signage and educational materials for any restaurant wishing to be smoke free.

State mails vehicle renewal notices for Jan., Feb., late

Adair Clerk says no penalty for Jan. bills if paid by Feb. 28, 2008

Due to the late decision made by the Revenue Cabinet (Property Tax Section) on what value to use for the 2009 taxation of vehicles, the renewal notices for January and February have not been mailed out from Frankfort. The Revenue Department informed my office that the notices should be mailed out next week. For those persons who have vehicle registrations that expire in January, there will be no penalty added to the property tax due, if paid by February, 28, 2009. If anyone has questions about their registration, feel free to call the office at (270) 384-2801 or (270) 384-4007.

Slick roadway blamed for LBN injury accident this morning

An injury accident occurred at 7:40amCT, eight miles east of Edmonton, KY, on the Louie B Nunn Parkway.

A vehicle operated by Courtney Anne Kimbler, 32, Columbia, KY, was traveling west when she lost control of her vehicle due to the slick conditions.

Her vehicle traveled through the Median and into the path of a snow plow that was struck while traveling west on the LBN. The snow plow was operated by Numia Smith, 67 of Glasgow, KY.

Obituary: Roy Dunbar, JR, buried in Millington, TN

He was a member of a respected South Adair County, KY family

Roy Dunbar, Jr., AMCS, USN, Retired age 86 years of Millington, TN passedaway on December 25, 2008, on his 66th wedding anniversary. He was a retiredVocational teacher, a WWII and Vietnam Navy Veteran, a life member of VFW Post 7175, a member of the American Legion, a member of Fleet Reserve Post 86, and member of Disabled Veterans.

He was the son of the late Roy and Ora Branham Dunbar of Adair County, KY.

Ice Storm causes delays, cancellations, problems Jan. 27, 2009

Adair County School District Director of Student Transportation David Jones called at 4:10amCT this morning, Tuesday, January 27, 2009, to announce that there will be no school in Adair County School District Schools today because of icy roads.

Campbellsville University is operating on a two-hour delay this morning.

Lindsey Wilson College has announced a delayed class schedule for today. Details of Classes Re-scheduled at LWC website

Betty's OK Country Cooking will be closed today due to the freezing rain and sleet. "Please drive safely if you must be out today," writes Rich Ollestad.

County Judge Executive Ann Melton is opening the Courthouse Annex Basement to anyone who is without power today. "We'll keep the Annex available throughout the storm," she said, and added that could be a two day period. "We don't have cots at the moment," she added, "but Greg (Adair Emergency Medical Director Greg Thoms) is trying to find some in case they are needed. The phone number at the Judge's Office is (270) 384-4703.

Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair has announced a delay in office hours for today. The office will be open at 10:00am Tuesday morning, January 27, 2009, she said.

The Adair County Extension Homemakers Council, scheduled for 6:00pmCT, tonight, Tuesday, January 7, 2009, has been cancelled. -KELLI BONIFER

Adair County Road Department has been called out to removed a downed tree blocking Sulpher Creek Road in District 5 near Clay Ridge, the CJE's office said.

Agape House Center will be closed today due to the ice story, according to Stephanie Caldwell, DIrector.

City Council gives 23 acres to Lindsey Wilson College

In a meeting with a stated agenda to discuss "Land Acquisition," the City of Columbia City Council voted 5-0 to give 23 acres of city owned land to Lindsey Wilson College as part of the Pinewood Country Club acquisition. The vote came in a special called meeting which began at 1:00pm Monday, January 26, 2009 and was over before 2:00pmCT.

The 23-acres were given with the stipulation that the lake on the property can be used by the public for fishing. The Council also voted to stipulate that if the College should sell the land, the City would be re-imbursed for the value of the land at the time of the sale.

Present for the meeting and voting unanimously were Councillors June Parson, Joe Moore, Edwin Taylor, Craig Dean, and Charles Grimsley. Mayor Patrick R. Bell presided. The meeting was recorded by City Clerk Carolyn Edwards. Also present were Citizens Roy Rademacher and Billy Joe Fudge and members of the media.
