It was cold in 1962 with chill of cold war, Cuban missile crisis Tampan, now an Adair Countian, had never heard of Columbia, KY, when it was the coldest place in the United States, but he knew it was a cold time in America, even in Florida. Had no idea where destiny would bring him About: "In Florida when Columbia KY was coldest place in USA" letter from Richard Hovious To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I am a Tampa, Florida, native. In the fall of 1962 I was driving home from the University of South Florida with the members of my carpool fully expecting to see mushroom clouds from a nuclear attack we felt imminent on McDill Air Force Base directly in front of us. It was the day of days for the Cuban Missile Crisis. That was one of the coldest days I remember and the cold came from the "Cold War"! I had never heard of Columbia, Kentucky, at that time and certainly had no idea it would be destiny that brought me here. s/Charles Marshburn 2009-01-18 14:00:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Writer says better idea is to block access to bypass from KY 439 Response to: "Wants action on KY 439CWB before fatality occurs" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: This is a bypass. If we clutter this bypass up with stop lights, then we should not have a bypass. Traffic approaching the bypass should yield as the bypass traffic has the right of way. I have a better idea, lets block off the entrance to the bypass from this road instead, then we won't have an intersection at this road anymore. Situation solved! Putting in a red light does not guarantee that people will stop, because people run red lights too! s/Allen Owens 2009-01-18 10:20:03 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Joe Ballou within 3.25 pounds of pecan record One hundred pounds of kernels from two Rives Kerbow trees would far eclipse previous record for his trees, and he thinks it would be a record for Adair County Click on headline for complete story, 5 photos By Ed Waggener Joe Ballou says that he has now shelled 96.75 pounds of pecans from two of his trees this year. "That will be a record for Adair County," I believe. One hundred pounds of pecans kernels from two trees is one he set, an arbitrary figure, he admits--but an honorable and monumental one, too. With pecans selling in the supermarket for as much as $12 a pound in cans, that would give this year's harvest from his Old Springfield Road farm in District 6 of Adair County a street value of over $1200.
