Letter: How can we worry about wars, economy?

About: Link CJ story says Kentucky will have a bear hunting season

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

How could one possibily be worried about bad economy and wars around the world when we've got "BOOZIN, BEAR HUNTIN' and SMOKIN'" to keep us entertained? Will we be able to do all three at once?

On a serious note, my wife still can not walk because of being hit head on by a drunk driver, four months ago. If we had our choice, we would much rather the other driver had been smoking a legal cigarette instead of passed out drunk behind the wheel.

Letter: Support's Beverly Merritt's Letter

About: "Reader cites CDC research for staying Dry"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

As I read Beverly's comment on the wet dry issue. I had tears come to my eyes. Hat's off to you. Bev, for submitting a very educated and honest and humble comment.

I hope readers will educate themselves on this issue and do the research needed before making a comment. Life brought my beliefs for my No comment. It seems I am almost standing alone for the No alcohol in Adair County. Your comment just reminds me that even though we sometimes think we stand alone, we are not alone.

Letter: Reader responds to letter quoting CDC statistics

Adair resident of 26 years says matter ought to be put to vote, though she doesn't suggest the most desirable outcome; says dangers from DUI may be more serious in legally dry counties than in wet ones. This item is unsigned, but is courteous and thoughtful. The opinion is not counted in the survey for Looking Ahead>

About: "Reader cites CDC research for staying Dry"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have been following the comments on the wet vs. dry in Adair County. I usually don't comment publically on issues like this because I consider this a personal choice that should be expressed in the polling place.

Letter: Amen to rose colored glasses label for Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Someone in all the comments has said that Columbia and Adair County needed to get rid of their rose-colored glasses.

Well, all I can say is, "Amen!"

If you think that you can't get industry, restaurants or whatever in the area because of the alcohol situation or lack of you are nuts. Adair County and Columbia are among the "Wettest of the 'Dry'" areas in KY.

Looking ahead: Non drinker weighs in for wet/moist

With this "Yes" response the survey is: "No," stay dry, 24%; "Yes," for wet/moist, 76%

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

My husband, sister and brother-in-law go out to eat every Friday night. We always go out of town for the simple fact there are no restaurants in this town to choose from. It is a fact, if you want nice restaurants you have to be a moist county. Nice restaurants such as Applebee's, Rafferty's, Red Lobster, Texas Roadhouse, etc. are not going to come to a town that is not moist. Also, a lot of businesses won't even consider locating in an area that is not moist.

Looking Ahead, 2009: Signed, Yes for wet/moist

With this yes vote, survey is: 24% No, stay dry; 76% Yes for Wet/Moist

Good Morning, Ed,

Over the last several days I've been reading with great interest the CM letters about the moist/wet vote. I have lived in several different states in my life and some for several years and all were wet. I think both sides of this issue have valid points to make, but if you look at some of the things people have done while being drunk in this area in just the last couple of years, in "dry" territory, you'll find:

About: Looking Ahead 2009. Yes to making the county wet

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have been reading some of the letters you have published on this issue.Frankly, I never thought I would live to see the day that my quaint and beautiful little hometown would even consider legalizing the sale of alcohol.

Now that the issue is being tossed about, I recommend that your readers and community leaders do some serious research on the matter. Remove the "moral and religious" basis for your opinions and focus instead on weighing the substantial risks vs. the arguable, yet questionable benefits of such a change.

I live in the Knifley area, and there are two bootleggers in this area. They sell to teenagers, or to anyone with money. It has been said they have food stamp cards of people in this area they hold from month to month, and trade them alcohol for them.

A wet vote for the county would stop a lot of things such as these from happening and would bring a lot of extra money to our county that is going to Marion County and Warren County.
