China at Inaugural Luncheon has Kentucky influence

2009-01-10 - Washington, DC - Photo from Inaugural.senate.gov.
KENTUCKY INFLUENCE: "The first course at the Inaugural Luncheon for Barack Obama will be served on replicas of the china from the Lincoln Presidency, which was selected by Mary Todd Lincoln at the beginning of her husband's term in office. The china features the American bald eagle standing above the U. S. Coat of Arms, surrounded by a wide border of 'solferino,' a purple-red hue popular among the fashionable hosts of the day," states Inaugural website. Both President Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln were Kentuckians.

Letter: From former Adair Countian in Oklahoma

About:
Looking Ahead 2009: Writer says "No" to alcohol

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I haven't lived in Adair County for over 40 years, but I am a ACHS and Lindsey Wilson grad.

To the lady that doesn't want booze sold or gambling I am sorry to have to tell you this but it has been sold there for as long as I can remember, and I am 65. Also, the same is true for gambling. I don't drink or gamble, sorry that's not right. I gamble ever time I get on the highway.

Epicurean Kentuckian:
Obama Inaugural luncheon fit for a Kentuckian

The Inaugural Luncheon menu and recipes are online at the Inaugural web site. The luncheon menu is mouth-watering, and would remind any Adair Countian who has ever read the early menus offered at the old Hotel Miller after it was first build of feasts once offered on the Columbia Square. (If anyone has the information, which was printed in the first or second Daily Statesman following the fire, we appreciate a copy. Use any Contact/Submit button to send.)The menu will feature foods which fellow Illinoisan Abraham Lincoln loved. The second course includes items native Kentuckian Abraham Lincoln could have enjoyed in his Old Kentucky Homes. The Luncheon menu, according to the site, includes:

Adair Fiscal Court Agenda for Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009

The Adair County Fiscal Court meets Tuesday, Jan. 13 in its regular monthly meeting. A number of important items are scheduled for deliberation, including appointment of Fiscal Court Committees and Chairmanships, approval for hiring at the Adair County Regional Jail and Green River Animal Shelter, approval of new speed limits, and appointment of Columbia/Adair County Water Commission board members. In addition to many other items on the 28-item agenda, County School Superintendent Darrell Treece will speak to the court early in the session.

Click Here for Full Printable Agenda

The public is invited and encouraged to attend. For some reason, recent meetings have have been having lower attendance, reversing a trend seen early in the administration. Fiscal Court meetings are covered by Adair County media, but we at ColumbiaMagazine.com encourage in person attendance, which gives one a much better sense of what happens and provides much better citizen feedback to the court than by getting media reports. Citizens are given the opportunities to address Fiscal Court. The meeting room is one of the best venues for public meetings in Adair County. Judge Melton also invites members of other boards, councils, and commissions to attend Fiscal Court meetings. -ED WAGGENER

Looking Ahead 2009: Writer says No to alcohol

This is a "No" vote, but letters in survey at present run 2-1 for wet/moist

About: Priorities should be what we need not what we want

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Each of us have the right to our opinions. I have mine.

Number one: I am certainly against the sale of alcohol in our city. Those that like to drink, and gamble and etc, can go to the riverboat, or elsewhere. I have seen first hand the destruction that alcohol brings--all of us have! It doesn't matter that its with a meal or at a gambling boat, or even at home. Like the lottery it could bring in money to our town, but do we need and want these types of business in our city?

ACHD sends Information Sheet on Pertussis/whooping cough

Two cases reported in Adair County School District

From Adair County Health Department

Whooping cough, or Pertussis, is back! Not just in distant communities, but also here in the Lake Cumberland area and it is affecting many individuals.

Whooping cough is a bacterial disease, which initially produces cold-like symptoms, fever is absent or minimal, followed by a cough, which in adults can last for 100 days. Attacks of coughing can be so severe that patients produce a "whoop" and may vomit or even break ribs. Unfortunately the immunity from DTaP vaccine, which adolescents and adults received as children, has waned and these age groups are now susceptible.

Kentucky Open Door website provides access to state finances

Governor Beshear puts state finances in public view with bi-partisan effort. Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) and State Auditor Luallen (D) praise initiative.
Editorial comment: State site is example of what should be done on Adair County, City of Columbia, and all local government entities and organizations receiving special tax payer support from government units. Adair County School District already has detailed financial information on line at the district website. A good start. A wonderful example. If other governmental units in Adair County have similar disclosures online, please let us know.-Ed Waggener for CM
