From Knifley, KY, COF addesses issue of smoking ban

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Since I quit smoking several months ago, I've been waiting for some revelation from on high to indicate I erred on the smoking ban.

About the only difference I see is thet I'm more aware of the smell of tobacco when I go into Crossroads or Bakers than I was before I quit.

Letter: Problems of student behavior dates back to 18th century

Response to: Adair Countians don't wear rose-colored glasses

Ed:

This issue is one of the oldest problems in the town-gownrelationship between colleges and towns, dating back to at least the18th century in the United States.

One of the reasons many colleges were located on a hill or outside ofthe city limits was to prevent college students from being tempted andcorrupted by what were seen as the evils of town life, which in the 18thand 19th centuries included saloons, gambling parlors and perhaps ahouse or two of ill repute. For example, a 1916-17 Lindsey Wilsoncatalog boasted that Columbia has not known to have had a saloon "formore than 40 years."

Letter: Thinks even a moist law would be an improvement

A Vote for a Moist/Wet vote. Signed. What do you think? Send comments to ColumbiaMagazine.com, Looking Ahead 2009

Dear Ed,

As you know I have lived here 16+ years. In the years I have lived in this dry county I have made many trips to Bowling Green and dined in restaurants that serve liquor. I have never done so without seeing at least several people from Adair dining and drinking alcohol in these restaurants.

Some of them are the same people that preach about a dry county. Also, I have been to many parties in private homes where beer, wine and hard liquor were served. I think the whole thing is pretty hypocritical.

Letter: Adair Countians don't wear rose-colored glasses

This letter addresses noise, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and unnecessary, unhealthy noise levels in Columbia. The writer moved from the City of Columbia to an area just outside the city after five years of intermittent, intolerable conditions which, at the time, couldn't seem to be handled by those with the power to do so. Columbians pay Rolls Royce city taxes, and deserve Rolls Royce services, Rolls Royce noise levels. So many of the leaders in our community live in insular neighborhoods where noise abuse does not affect them personally that they seem immune to the suffering of those subjected to the rackets imposed on others. Others fail to speak out because doing so would hurt their busineses. And, unfortunately, some won't help because of fear. As one who has lived with intolerable, but preventable noise for years, just two blocks from the Adair County courthouse, I think that if even one family is subjected to noise abuse--which is physical and painful--our community needs to make adjustments promptly. I think that the City is now beginning to address the issues, and I am sure the college does all in its power to be good neighbors now. -ED WAGGENER

About: http://www.columbiamagazine.com/index.php?sid=26860> Lovely area but time to take off rose colored glasses

I would like to respond to Betty Fausnaugh's letter. I take issue with her insinuation that people in Adair County are wearing rose colored glasses regarding the ills of the world.

From 1996-2001, we owned and lived in property in the vicinty of the college. The houses on this particular street were side by side with only a small side yard separating them.

Village Grump gives origin of his sobriquet

make you a Village Grump,

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I believe Ed Weggener blessed me with this title when I wrote a comment that was not Pollyana approved!

The grump thing comes from culture shock. Buying the tractor was a good thing for me. When I'm on the tractor, I think only good thoughts.

Mr. Marshburn, we wish you many long, long rides on your tractor. -EW

Gas Price Drumbeat: Thinks more competition needed here

CM Editorial: Drive less, buy less gasoline to get the price down. Demand speed limits for the whole county which will allow Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) tavel throughout Adair County, including from Columbia to Holladay Place. -ED WAGGENER

Ed,It seems that gas is always higher in Columbia I think too few competitors furnish the gas here. I say let them keep it.We haven't bought gas or diesel in Columbia forever. If more people would leave Columbia to purchase gas and while in another county buy thier groceries, clothes, and anything else they need like I do then we may see some changes. You may not save anything, but what have you got to lose? Gas, groceries, and everything else seems to be cheaper in other counties.

s/Joyce Loy

Gas Price Drumbeat: An out-of-town rip-off

A BOUQUET TO LOCAL FULL SERVICE STATIONS: Driver, used to dealing with honest full-service stations in Columbia, KY, is shocked when the cost of gas was over $1.00 higher when an attendant pumped in a nearby town
About: What is going on?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Today, I was in (another town) and gas was $1.65. I thought I would fill up since I was there. I pulled into the (station). They had the price posted 1.65 on their sign. I pulled up to the full service side and had them fill up. When he told me the amount, I questioned the posted sign. Gas was 1.65 if you pumped it yourself. I paid 2.99 since he pumped it for me. Talk about a rip-off!!!
