KSP Post 15 warns of new scam involving stolen cell phones Thief emptied couple's bank account after texting husband on phone stolen from wife's purse. Got PIN number. There are precautions to prevent the new identity theft, Tpr. Gregory says FromTpr. Billy Gregory, Public Affairs Officer Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY Post 15 has received information in reference to a new identity theft scam that has been developed through the use of stolen cell phones. Recently, a lady's handbag was stolen which contained her cell phone. The thief used the cell phone to text the lady's husband asking him to text her the PIN number for their bank account. The husband replied and within 20 minutes all of their money had been withdrawn from the bank account. Kentucky State Police are advising that when entering contacts into your cell phone directory, avoid using names such as "mom", "dad" or "home". These names describe relationships and may provide other important information that would not normally be disclosed. If texts are received asking for personal information, call the number back to confirm the request. Also, be cautious about meeting "friends and family" at a specified location if requested to do so by text. Parent's should insure that their children's directories are also void of these types of entries. 2009-01-07 15:04:31 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Police and Fire Reports

Letter: All citizens should be economic development recruiters Note on this unsigned article: There are some interesting proposals in this letter, which was unfortunately, unsigned. The figures used as to the cost of the Industrial Recruiter are way off. The current, highly capable Economic Development Recruiter offered to work for free, but the Economic Development Authority insisted she received a nominal annual pay of $10,000 a year. Also, when you do write, we hope you'll have the modest courage to at least use your real name. None of the signers of the Declaration of Independence signed the document "Concerned Citizen." If they had all been that timid, we'd still be subjects of the Crown. We do agree with the writer that the Economic Development Authority needs the broadest input. In the past, one sometimes wondered if the IDA were simply waiting to head off a business already hell bent on coming to Columbia long enough to organize a ribbon-cutting so they could pat each other on the back and get their picture took receiving a plaque. No so today, but sometimes, it happened that way--in the past. The late Ruel Wooten used to have a sign in his window say, "There's no telling how much progess we could make if we didn't worry about who gets the credit. - Ed Waggener To ColumbiaMagazine.com I would love to see this area be able to sustain various new businesses, both large and small, that would be able to offer competitive jobs. Would be reversal of past trends favoring lenders over borrowers. AGs say voluntary reform by lenders not enough, government action needed From Commonwealth News Center Attorney General Jack Conway, along with the attorneys general of 21 other states and the District of Columbia, today sent a letter to U.S. House and Senate leadership urging them to amend the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to permit federal bankruptcy courts to protect families from foreclosure. "It is imperative that we work with the courts, banks and consumers to provide a real solution to help families meet their financial obligations and remain in their homes," General Conway said. "Bankruptcies that result in homes being foreclosed upon are certainly not in the best interest of financial institutions or consumers. It benefits both sides to amend terms of mortgages to allow consumers to repay the bank and keep their homes."
