When hunting and trapping was an integral part of our lives

Billy Joe Fudge remembers when small game hunting was not just for sport, but to improve the quality of life. When hunting equipment was held in high regard, and when dogs were respected on a plane with or above their human associates. It's comment prompted by seeing: Christmas in Fairplay and reading the accompanying Chris Bennett story.

Chris, your story and picture bring very pleasant memories to my mind and warm my heart. Hunting and trapping was such an integral part of our lives growing up in the country prior to the urbanization of our rural culture.

Oh, I know we still hunt turkey and deer, but small game hunting for the reasons we hunted was something different.

Rabbit box trap: Time was, they help complete the feast

TIME WAS, ALMOST EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY knew how to build and maintain a rabbit box trap, though in the olden days of Billy Joe Fudge's time, most weren't this fancy, consisting only of a heavy wood box with a rock weight on top, held up by a figure four trip mechanism any boy could make with a pocket knife. Mr. Rabbit would eat yield to the temptation of a tasty slice of apple and activate the trip, the box would drop, and he'd be dinner or the completing side dish to a Thanksgiving or Christmas Turkey or baking hen.

She was a member of a large, respected Adair County family. She was a long time employee of Westlake Regional Hospital and attended the United House of Prayer. Mrs. Ford is the third loss for her family in past few months

Jamason Staten wins Christmas Cutie contest

It's Christmas Eve and 19 month old Jamason Staten is $70.00 richer. Jamason's mom entered a picture of him in a Christmas photo contest on the internet using a picture which Sherry Turner Wilkerson took earlier this month.

His photo was chosen for the Grand Supreme Christmas Cutie Winner.

"We want to than Miss Sherri for his winning photo & wish everyone a Merry Christmas," his mother said.

Jamason is the son of Wes and Bridgette Staten.

My Grandpa was a diehard outdoorsman, and he was from the old school. In the winter he earned money by trapping and selling furs. This photo was taken Christmas Morning 1977 by my mother. I am about three years old in the accompanying photo, and my sister, Tammy, was eight.

    Parnell's To Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

    Joseph and Norma Jean Parnell will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today, December 24, 2008. They were married on December 24, 1958 by Bro. Otis Melton.

    They have two children: Ann (Timmy) Marr and Pam (David) Jones. They have one grandchild, David Marr.

    Their children are planning a reception to honor their anniversary on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church from 2:00 - 4:00 pmCT.
