The football game isn't very interesting and frankly I am lonesome this time of year without Connie. I realize I am not the only one for whom Christmas can be a very lonely time. The Epicurean Kentuckian: Hot biscuits The most fitting conveyance for country ham and tomato. A Sunday lesson on crust side up. "Real biscuits should be sturdy enough to hold lots of apple butter, and just smaller in diameter than a slice of ripe tomato, and just dry enough to handle the juices from said tomato, which, when paired with a slice of country ham on said biscuit, will become the Most Delicious Sandwich in the Universe," Pen writes. A Canadian suggested dipping them in gravy, and Pen made this note, " I'm not opposed to gravy at all, but I'm not sure about dipping. Split one or two into top/bottom halves, lay them crust-side-down, and then pour gravy over the top of them. But I still say the very best use of proper biscuits is as a vehicle for tomatoes and country ham.The acid in the tomatoes and the salt in the ham work magic chemistry together, and the riper the tomato, and the saltier the ham, the better." We're glad Somewhere in Hezekiah or Deuteronomy there must be a proscription against crust side up for gravying. It ain't Bible crust side up! That's yielding to the ways of a chain restaurant. An abomination, isn't it? Like putting mayonnaise on only one slice of the sandwich bread. -CM (ADV): What's Cooking in Adair County, KY, today: Click restaurant names for hours, directions, and prices.

The Tradition of the Christmas Puzzle This story was first posted for Thanksgiving, 2004. It has been one of our most popular stories and is repeated again today. By Wilma Jean Waggener Cravens I remember when I was a little girl, growing up with a big, boisterous family in a big white house on Jamestown Street. It was such a long, long time, then, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when Santa would come. The wait was long, but Mama and Daddy had a diversion to make the anticipation bearable: The Christmas Puzzle. Click here to continue 2008-12-21 04:21:44 | Comments | Printable version

Winter is good time to go for smallmouth bass Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Although seemingly rough, Smallmouth Bass fishing in the snow is highly productive, especially at nearby Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow Lakes From Commonwealth News CenterDepartment of Fish & Wildlife story Frankfort, KY We have experiences in the outdoors that can be transcendent, although the conditions are rough. Catching crappie after crappie in cold March sleet, bagging your biggest turkey ever in a chilling April downpour or taking a limit of ducks in weather so cold hot coffee quickly freezes on the rim of your cup make great memories. Letter: Living Singing Christmas Tree best ever To ColumbiaMagazine.com: My husband and I went to hear the Christmas Musical at the Columbia Christian Church last night and it was most beautiful both in sight and sound. I have paid big ticket prices for concerts before. This performance would have rated much higher than some and it is free. I have attended this event in years past and this is the best one yet. There are all taste of music represented, so if you think you are simply going to hear classical music you will be pleasantly surprised. There's even a touch of "Country" tastefully inserted. The musical will be presented again Sunday night, December 21, 2008, and if there is any way possible you can work it into your busy holiday schedule, you will not be sorry. It is a community presentation, you don't have to be a Christian Church member, or even a Christian to go and enjoy this wonderful event. Wear something comfortable and warm since the singers have to have it very cool to keep from overheating from all the beautiful lights and the hard work they put into this performance. s/Patty Bunch 2008-12-21 03:08:17 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback Birthdays and Anniversaries for December 21 Happy Anniversary, Greg and Laura Murrell (1985) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Ricky and Linda Bennett (1972) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ashley Sneed (1998) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Brandi Prichard | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Chris Coffey (1998) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Claudia Froedge | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Dana Talley | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Doug Waggener | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ella Jane Cundiff (2015) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Emily Brooke Ellis (1988) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Holly Edwards Grimsley | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jimmy Luttrell | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jo Ann Feese Curry | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Molly Rae Hadley (2002) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ray Rowe | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ryan Bauer | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Shawn Bardin | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Tina Kessinger (2000) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Valerie Loy (1955) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Zoey Everidge | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Glen Stephens, Russell Springs, KY (1937-2019) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Nettie Coomer, Adair Co., KY (1926) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Mitchell Rodgers, Taylor County, KY (1936) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Shelia June Willis Stearns, 54, Cumberland Co., KY (1958) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Jimmy Reliford, Adair County, KY (1950-2013) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Jannis Jewel Phelps, 87, Liberty, KY, (1927-2015) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Willodene Bernard, 81, Russell County, KY (1934-2016) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Edora Bradley Tucker, 83, Russell County, KY (1933-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Emma Jean Cochran, Casey County, KY (1936-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Shirlene Bragg Shaw, Metcalfe Co., KY (1958-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Kimberly McAllister Downs, Adair County, KY (1973-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Lorene Spoon, Adair Co., KY native (1934-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Darlene Brown Probus, 60, Weed community, Adair County, KY (1957-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Edna Bernice Jarboe Farmer, Taylor County, KY (1925-2018) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Dianne Loy, Russell Co., KY (Dec. 21, 1944-Nov. 21, 2005) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Nelson Jeffries, 73, Greensburg, KY (1947-2021) Obituary | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Ollie Pearl England Branstetter, 92, Summer Shade, KY (1927-2020) Obituary | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Paul D.
