Christmas Lights of Adair Co. 2008: Mark & Cindy Harris home

2008-12-12 - Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Santa Claus is an animated fellow at the Mark and Cindy Harris residence at the foot of Lindsey Hill. At first, it's hard to determine whether it is really Santa Claus, really Chief Mark Harris, or a mechanical Santa giving the welcoming wave. Whatever, it's a pure delight for kids of all ages. The display was the winner of the 2008 Chamber Decorating Contest for Best Home Exterior. Printable 2008 Lights of Christmas Tour in Adair Co. KY

Letter: Writer thinks veterans tributes should be free

Veterans park for Columbia, Adair County

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

If charges are made (for blocks honoring individual veterans.-CM) many would be left off the list. Then it would not be a true memorial just a recognition for the ones that can afford to have their names put on the list. Many of our young men and old that have died in service for our county. I have no family members or no one that could pay to have their names engraved. The whole ideal in my opinion was to to have a memorial park for our veterans seems quite quaint to offer a memorial, then charge fees for the honor to be recognize. Freedom: the veterans have paid the price for all of us. It's called "Freedom." I salute all the veterans. I honor them.

Dr. Roger Smith says Amen to Dr. Phil Aaron article

About: "Politics and Public Service in the U.S. Senate" by Dr. Phiil Aaron

Ed,

A great big AMEN to Dr. Aaron on his article refuting the apparent political expert, David Hawpe. I am old enough to remember Sen. Cooper, and have spoken to Sen. McConnell several times, and have no lapses in memory to their contributions to our area. There seems to be quite a different prospective of their benefit to all citizens of the Commonwealth and not just to suit those in Louisville. Mr. Hawpe's paper became so slanted that I cancelled my subscription last year.

More fan mail for Fog Rolling In

About: Shamarie Claiborne's Fog Rolling In

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I didn't realize that Shamarie Claiborne is so talented. Her photos are so beautiful and we enjoy them so much. This last one, Fog Rolling in on Keen Wilson Road is fantastic!

She could easily win a contest with them. The black and white is perfect for the fog moving in on the farm scene.

Don't we have alot of talented photographers in our county?

(Pen I know you don't live here but you do a great joy with your camera too.) Don't mean to leave you out!

Letter: John Chowning lauds Dr. Phil Aaron commentary

About: "Politics and Public Service in the U S Senate"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks to Dr. Phil Aaron for his insightful editorial in response to that of David Hawpe. I applaud his defense of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and his very fine summary of the extraordinary record of the late Senator John Sherman Cooper. Senator McConnell's contributions and service to this state and nation are certainly comparable to that of Senator Cooper.

Dr. Aaron also points out the friendship between the two gentlemen and the excellence displayed by the staffs of both men. Mitch McConnell may be a politician - contrary to Mr. Hawpe's limited understanding - anyone who runs for office fits into that category as well as those who participate in the process. No one has done more for our part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky than Mitch McConnell. I applaud Dr. Aaron's excellent editorial.s/John Chowning

Politics and Public Service in the U. S. Senate

Dr. Phil Aaron has written commentary on an editorial page column in the Louisville newspaper written by David Hawpe. Dr. Aaron's article, Politics and Public Service in the U. S. Senate draws on Dr. Aaron's experience working with Senator Mitch McConnell and also with the late Senator John Sherman Cooper. Dr. Aaron takes issue with Hawpe's characterization of Senator McConnell as a "politician" while elevating Senator Cooper to "public servant." Both were "public servants," Dr. Phil maintains.Sponsored by Dr. Phil Aaron Medical Center

Poem: Fog Rolling In

A beautiful scene on Keen Wilson Road, between Ozark and Zion in Adair County, captioned Fog Rolling In, inspired this poem by the same name by the photographer:

Fog Rolling In

The rain brings down a veil,
The rain,
it comes from everywhere.

A veil so white,
so soft,
so surreal.
When it comes,
some will fear.

Yet,
when one's heart is true,
the rain,
the veil,
creates nothing,
but real.

Likes Veterans park idea, but not charges for recognition

Comments concerning: Liberty Veterans Memorial Park Individual markers

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

As a former resident of Adair County and a retired and disabled veteran, I applaud Judge Melton and Mayor Bell for their efforts to build a park commemorating veterans.

I do take issue though with the idea of charging veterans, their families, or friends to have the veteran's name placed on a brick or any where else in the park.

Not all will pay to do this, thus the park becomes a memorial to those who do. This would be a great injustice to all who have or are still fighting and sacrificing for their country.
