McGaha Comment about: An honor to be a friend of Vernie McGaha To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I'm another one of those "good folks" from Goodin's Crossroads (Ella) on KY 206. I've known Vernie since he was a baby, and his Mom and Dad. His aunt, Joyce Bryant Anderson, was one of my childhood friends growing up. He is truly an asset of Adair and surrounding area. The Crossroads Quartet sang at my mother's funeral, before he was part of it, and I try to go listen to them when I can. Barbara and Schyler must be very proud. As a small business owner, I've had several occcasions to call Vernie and he's always willing to help in any way he can. Remembering: John Edd Burton, Jr. To ColumbiaMagazine.com I would like to say that Junior Burton is one of the most wonderful men I have ever had the opportunity to know. My family and I have attended church with Junior and Betty since the children were babies and we purchased our farm from them December 6, 2001. He would always tease and say they had given us the farm. He and Betty had owned the farm since 1967 and I know it meant so much to them, but it already means so much to our family. Christmas is for the Birds, too By Barbara Armitage The Adair County Garden Club Christmas Tree is on display through the holidays in the hallway of the old court house in downtown Columbia. The tree this year was decorated by members especially for the birds. We humans can enjoy its rustic beauty inside and then after Christmas the tree will be moved outdoors for the birds turn to enjoy it. Garden Club members want you to remember that the little creatures enjoy a treat too at this time of year. Decorations of dried apples and oranges and garlands of popcorn and raisins are gourmet food for our feathered friends. Balls made of suet, peanut butter, cornmeal and birdseed will provide high energy food that helps keep birds warm and healthy throughout the winter. This tree serves another purpose too, an environmental friendly one. The tree is a locally grown cedar and the decorations are all completely edible (or bio-degradable). 2008-12-09 09:37:00 | Comments | Printable version

Poem: Love is the reason for the season Fay Wright, Greensburg, emailed with a poem she wrote about Christmas: Love is the reason for the season known as Christmas Love is the reason for the season known as Christmas That we celebrate at this time of the year. In a cold dreary stable in the town of Bethlehem over two thousand years ago;God's most perfect gift of Love was sent from heaven above, down to all of mankind. A tiny baby whose birth an angel named Gabriel foretold; He told Mary: You are the chosen one; Highly favoured by God. The shepherds were watching their flocks of sheep; in the eastern sky a bright star suddenly appeared. An angel spoke to them: Do not be afraid, for I bring you glad tidings of joy. Go to Bethlehem. There in a manger lying wrapped in swaddling clothes; you will find this Baby, His Mother, Mary; His Father, Joseph watching over him there. Yes, dear person: God's perfect gift of Love; His Only Begotten Son, named Jesus, is the reason for the season known as Christmas. -FAY WRIGHT Greensburg, KY 2008-12-09 04:03:33 | Comments | Printable version

Mike Bennett suggests Christmas Lights routes project Ed, I would like to make a suggestion for a ColumbiaMagazine.com project. My wife and I enjoy driving around the county looking at Christmas lights. However, sometimes we drive for miles looking for lights, finding them just by chance. Perhaps people could report to ColumbiaMagazine.com where they have seen nice displays of lights and you could post it so all the county could drive by and enjoy them. For starters, there are several homes on Jones Chapel Road with Christmas lights. Thanks, s/Mike Bennett Thanks. It's a good idea. We now have a list of four places in the Events in Brief section of the Today Feature. We'll add Jones Chapel to that list and hope that readers will follow Mike Bennett's suggestion and send other Christmas Lights roads to us. Photos and detailed information wlll be welcome. -CM 2008-12-09 01:57:40 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback Birthdays and Anniversaries for December 9 Happy Birthday, Audreanna Alley (1998) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Daylon Joseph "D.J."
