CJE, Mayor want to build a veterans park in Columbia

Possible locations being studied: Adair County Fairgrounds. At a new park on the out skirts of Columbia. Near downtown, but likelihood of finding suitable, available location is not great

By Ed Waggener

Now, Adair County Mayor Pat Bell has told her that he's behind the effort, and will work to have the City of Columbia help with the venture.

Campbellsville University receives papers of Dr. Ron Lewis

Lewis says he uses Campbellsville as a "poster child" pertaining to how the city came back after the Fruit of Loom left, and community was on verge of "losing it." Regrets not getting Heartland Parkway during his tenure.

By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University accepted the congressional papers of Dr. Ron Lewis, R-KY, who is retiring in January 2009, in an announcement at the Chowning Executive Dining Room December 5, 2008.

Lewis, who has served as United States representative for the Second District of Kentucky for 14 and a half years, said it was an honor for CU to want his papers. He said it had been an "honor and a privilege" to serve his constituents.

KRT Theatre Review of Christmas Belles

Review of Christmas Belles at Kentucky Repertory Theatre, Horse Cave, KY
Next earlier Robert Stone review, King Lear at KRT

Review by Robert Stone

Christmas Belles wrings good news out of chaos when all have gone astray

Having a live sheep on the set is asking for trouble. Honey Raye Futrelle has decided to reorganize, update, and glamorize the church Christmas pageant and a live sheep is only the beginning of what goes wrong.

Christmas Belles opened at Kentucky Repertory Theatre December 5, 2008, giving us a continuing window into the lives of the Futrelle sisters of Fayro, Texas. This is the middle play of a trilogy that began with Dearly Beloved.

Letter: Another from Goodin's X-Roads appreciates Sen. McGaha

Comment about: An honor to be a friend of Vernie McGaha

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I'm another one of those "good folks" from Goodin's Crossroads (Ella) on KY 206. I've known Vernie since he was a baby, and his Mom and Dad. His aunt, Joyce Bryant Anderson, was one of my childhood friends growing up.

He is truly an asset of Adair and surrounding area.

The Crossroads Quartet sang at my mother's funeral, before he was part of it, and I try to go listen to them when I can. Barbara and Schyler must be very proud. As a small business owner, I've had several occcasions to call Vernie and he's always willing to help in any way he can. We appreciate you, Vernie!

Remembering: John Edd Burton, Jr.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I would like to say that Junior Burton is one of the most wonderful men I have ever had the opportunity to know.

My family and I have attended church with Junior and Betty since the children were babies and we purchased our farm from them December 6, 2001.

He would always tease and say they had given us the farm. He and Betty had owned the farm since 1967 and I know it meant so much to them, but it already means so much to our family.

Christmas is for the Birds, too

By Barbara Armitage

The Adair County Garden Club Christmas Tree is on display through the holidays in the hallway of the old court house in downtown Columbia. The tree this year was decorated by members especially for the birds. We humans can enjoy its rustic beauty inside and then after Christmas the tree will be moved outdoors for the birds turn to enjoy it.

Garden Club members want you to remember that the little creatures enjoy a treat too at this time of year. Decorations of dried apples and oranges and garlands of popcorn and raisins are gourmet food for our feathered friends. Balls made of suet, peanut butter, cornmeal and birdseed will provide high energy food that helps keep birds warm and healthy throughout the winter.

This tree serves another purpose too, an environmental friendly one. The tree is a locally grown cedar and the decorations are all completely edible (or bio-degradable).

Letter: Vernie McGaha has made a difference for so many

Comment About: An honor to be friend of Vernie McGaha

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I, too, wish to congratulate Vernie on being honored at our alma mater. He certainly has made a difference in the lives of so many, as he continues to do. Having grown up in the same community as Vernie, I was privileged to know all of his wonderful grandparents and his parents.

He was blessed to be born into a wonderful Christian family, and he has demonstrated those same Christian principles throughout his life. CU was wise to recognize his outstanding service.

Congratulations, Vernie! Keep up the good work of serving God and others.

Poem: Love is the reason for the season

Fay Wright, Greensburg, emailed with a poem she wrote about Christmas:

Love is the reason for the season known as Christmas
Love is the reason for the season known as Christmas
That we celebrate at this time of the year.

In a cold dreary stable in the town of Bethlehem over two thousand years ago;God's most perfect gift of Love was sent from heaven above, down to all of mankind.

A tiny baby whose birth an angel named Gabriel foretold;
He told Mary: You are the chosen one; Highly favoured by God.

The shepherds were watching their flocks of sheep;
in the eastern sky a bright star suddenly appeared.
An angel spoke to them: Do not be afraid, for I bring you glad tidings of joy. Go to Bethlehem. There in a manger lying wrapped in swaddling clothes; you will find this Baby, His Mother, Mary; His Father, Joseph watching over him there.

Yes, dear person: God's perfect gift of Love; His Only Begotten Son, named Jesus, is the reason for the season known as Christmas.

Mike Bennett suggests Christmas Lights routes project

Ed,

I would like to make a suggestion for a ColumbiaMagazine.com project. My wife and I enjoy driving around the county looking at Christmas lights. However, sometimes we drive for miles looking for lights, finding them just by chance.

Perhaps people could report to ColumbiaMagazine.com where they have seen nice displays of lights and you could post it so all the county could drive by and enjoy them.

For starters, there are several homes on Jones Chapel Road with Christmas lights.

Thanks,
s/Mike Bennett

Thanks. It's a good idea. We now have a list of four places in the Events in Brief section of the Today Feature. We'll add Jones Chapel to that list and hope that readers will follow Mike Bennett's suggestion and send other Christmas Lights roads to us. Photos and detailed information wlll be welcome. -CM
