Comment: Wine and food To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I believe that wine is also a food. Are there any vineyards in Adair County? I would like to believe that tobacco is not the only vice in the county. s/Charles Marshburn There was one vineyard which was almost very successful. It was located on scenic Nelson-Walkup Road near the Flatwoods in District 4 of Adair County. It fell prey to thieving deer, who would clean the crop just as it was ready for harvest. -CM 2008-12-07 12:29:21 | Comments | Printable version

Tom Chaney: Reprint of Review of Lion of Whitehall Of Writers and Their Books. Reprint of May 1, 2005 review of The Lion of Whitehall by William H. TownsendLast week's review: The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks By Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com The Lion of Whitehall Cassius Marcellus Clay has been a favorite Kentucky character of mine since I first heard the recording of William H. Townsend's The Lion of Whitehall in the late 1950's. Townsend's speech about the Kentucky abolitionist and President Abraham Lincoln's minister to Russia was given before the Civil War Round Table in Chicago in 1952. The speech is less a factual history than an impression of the personality of Clay; and is a fine example of old-fashioned Kentucky oratory. Do you have memories to share of Pearl Harbor attack? December 7, 1941, was a day which would live in infamy, President Roosevelt told the United States. Some Adair Countians remember the day as vividly as they remember the assassination of President Kennedy or the news of the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. Tommy Giles says he remembers that day when he was only around two years old when the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. "It's one of the earliest memories I have," he said, but he can't remember details. "I just remember hearing the grown ups talk about it," he added. Most his age have no recollection of that announcement in Columbia, though of those living then and now remember the jubilation which followed the announcement of the end of World War II.If you'd like to share your memories of that time 67 years ago, send using any Contact/Submit button. 2008-12-07 09:22:25 | Comments | Printable version
Chuck Hinman: A MAN NAMED BOB Short story: Even in the nursing home, his wife Connie had dress up clothes. The author insisted on it. But his her standout beauty attracted the attention of a handsome man, whose efforts to woo led an attempted wheel-chair kidnapping, foiled by a jealous husband. This is CM's third story by the author. The next previous story is ""Pew, I smell gasoline!" -CM As with all front page stories on CM, Click on Headline for full story, with photos, if any By Chuck Hinman (Contact the author at: charles.hinman @sbcglobal.net) Copyright Chuck Hinman; reprinted with author's permission After having to place Connie in a nursing home, I had difficulty turning over to their staff such things as choosing the daily clothes she was to wear. I had been involved in her personal care for almost 20 years. I grew to love the job! I had developed a nice wardrobe of attractive - stylish clothes for her. She didn't have "everyday clothes". She was always dressed up. Why not? She had graduated from mundane things that women ordinarily do. She was my woman and I loved her so! And I knew she liked the role so I spoiled her big time!
