(ADV): The Epicurean Kentuckian: Report on Papa Bear's Hotdog in Chicagoland There's no picture to go with this, but Big Rig food critic Allen Owens reported from dockside in Chicago that his lunch yesterday was a Chicago hotdog from Papa Bear's in Aurora, IL. In the City of Big Shoulders, hotdogs at Papa Bear's come in a box packed with more French Fries than one person can eat. The hotdog is a Vienna Beef Co. All-Beef Wiener. It served on a sesame seed bun, with a Kosher pickle spear, neon green relish, sport peppers, onions, slices of Roma tomatoes, cucumber, spicy mustard standard, which is the way he eats them, but additional adornments are optional. "A lot of drivers order two or three of them," he said, "but I'm a thin truck driver, A single box is more than I need for lunch." He gets good mileage out of the meal, he says, at a good price. "It costs around $3 for the dog and fries," he said. "I usually make it back to Louisville before I have to eat again." That's almost 300 miles, about five hours, on a Chicago Hotdog and French Fries. (ADV): What's Cooking in Adair County, KY, today: Click restaurant names for hours, directions, and prices.
