Gas prices dip again in Columbia: New low, $1.559

Gas at Lynn's Service Center on Jamestown Street was down to $1.559 per gallon on regular unleaded gas at 4:45pmCT on Wednesday afternoon, December 3, 2008. Similar prices were in effect at other Jamestown Street outlets and at the Gate and Chevron locations at Burkesville and Hudson Streets. The IGA Express store on Campbellsville Street, which had often led with decreases in the past few weeks, was at $1.609 at 4:45pmCT.

Saturday, November 29, 2008, the Speedway Station on Jamestown Street temporarily raised the price for the bottom grade to $1.759. At the time, it was the only station to raise prices, but the increase was only temporary and the lower price of $1.609 was quickly reposted.

ADAIR COUNTIAN LANCE BEAN back in the U.S.A. after a year working for a private contractor on water and wasterwater projects in Djibouti, Africa, shows off two of his prized handmade, stag handle hunting knives. His knives have been sold in several states, including Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Mississippi, and California. Most of them sell for $100 up. Production is pretty steady. "I try to make five or six a year," he says. He sticks to straight knives, he says. "Pocket knives have littler parts," he said. "It's too tedious." The blades on his knives are razor sharp. Since being back here he divides his time between his property at Jericho near Green River Lake, and Cincinnati. "The best thing about being back here is the all the green and the fresh smell of the air," adding, "the pay was great in Djibouti, but life is far better in Adair County."

CU 2008-2009 Presidential Ambassadors announced

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY -- President Michael V. Carter has announced the names of Campbellsville University's 2008-2009 Presidential Ambassadors.

"The welcoming spirit of CU's student body is always visible in a Presidential Ambassador," Carter says. These student leaders help to host on-campus guests for events such as board of trustees meetings, athletic events, Christmas open house at the President's home, campus wide Christmas dinner, Alumni and other special events.

Boil water advisory in effect for parts of Columbia

Precaution in effect until further notice

A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for customers living East of Burkesville Street and also East of Campbellsville Street inside the city limits.

The advisory has been issued due to a main water line break. Following such an event, the potential exists for bacteriological contamination of the water supply, therefore this Boil Water Advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure.

Until further notice, boil all water used for drinking and cooking, bringing the water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using.

The advisory will remain in effect until the situation has been corrected and test results have shown the water to be of an acceptable quality.

Obituary: Raymond Coffey, 80

Mr. Coffey was a member of a large, respected Western Adair County family. He was treasurer of Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church for 33 years, a farmer, and livestock dealer.

Raymond Coffey, 80, Columbia, KY (the Bliss Community) died Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at 9:21pm at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, KY.

He was a son of the late Cassius and Ina Coomer Coffey and was also preceded in death by five brothers, Ural, Garon, Earl, William Edgar, and Elroy Coffey, and two sisters, Margie Corbin and Avis Coffey.

35-40 booths for 2008 Christmas in Columbia

Christmas in Columbia will offer Christmas booths in four locations on December 6, 2008:
  1. In the hallway of the old courthouse
  2. In the purple building formerly occupied by Manor Abbey Art store on the Square
  3. The Ben Arnold building on the entrance to the Square Corner at Burkesville and the Square
  4. In the Adair Annex parking lot
There are now approximately 35-40 vendors who have signed up for booth space. -LISA LEE.

ACHS Indians plan White Out at Friday game

The ACHS Indians will host the Green County High School Dragons this Friday night, December 5, 2008, at 7:00pmCT. We will be having our 1st "White Out!" All fans are encouraged to wear white to the game. We hope to fill the gym with ACHS spirit by wearing white. Obituary: JoAnn Y. Phipps, 46

Mrs. Phipps was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and was a homemaker

JoAnn Y. Phipps, 46, 11001 Fairplay Road, Columbia, KY, (the Fairplay Community) passed away Tuesday, 2, 2008, at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY, after a long illness.

A memorial service will be Friday, December 5, 2008, at 1:00pmCT/2:00pmET, at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 9600 Campbellsville Road, Campbellsville, KY, with Rev. Don Watson the officiating clergy. The family will receive friends at the church after 12:00noonCT/1:00pmET Friday, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

I just wanted to brag on my daughter Jennifer (Kermeen) Griebenow and her husband Rick on serving a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner.

They served Turducken--a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. Wow. The accompanying picture shows what it looked like when sliced.

Her brother, Cpl Daniel Kermeen, wasn't able to be there for the feast but will be back in Columbia, KY for Christmas.

Unfortunately, his homecoming from Afghanistan was bittersweet. Daniel arrived on Sunday evening , October 26 and my mom passed away on October 28, 2008, in Indiana.

So, Daniel and Tavon made a quick trip north for the funeral.

We are very thankful that he made it home safely and truly appreciate all the prayers and packages that were sent on his behalf.

I agree with Beverly that the Recycle Trailer Calendar is a great idea. Could you let the folks at the Annex know that as we move deeper into December, we would appreciate knowing where the trailer will be rather than where it was.
