Theatre Review: King Lear shakes off old cares but new ones follow close Review of King Lear at Kentucky Repertory Theatre. Next earlier review: Robert Stone review of Amadeus at KRT Review by Robert Stone King Lear opened at Kentucky Repertory Theatre Friday, November 21, with Warren Hammack in the title role. Hammack, artistic/producing director of Horse Cave Theatre now KRT, was in Horse Cave from 1977 until his retirement in 2002. It would be easy to apply Lear's lines to him: "'tis our fast intent to shake all cares and business from our age, conferring them on younger strengths." But he has continued acting and his Lear is stunning. King Lear is a study of the difficulty of giving up great power while trying to maintain a lesser power position. Only respect can allow a person to maintain a lesser role. Lear begins by requesting declarations of love and the gets them from his two older daughters. Later we see that their responses were hollow. His youngest daughter says she only loves him in the ways that respect requires. With fuel prices hovering around $1.85 a gallon, KSP expects increased traffic on the roadways this holiday. Thanksgiving is the most dangerous holiday of the year for motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This includes the four-day holiday driving period surrounding that date when heavy traffic, weather and long-distance road trips combine to create severe travel conditions. Often, family celebrations include alcohol, which later evolves into impaired driving. Add that to heavy holiday traffic, and you have a recipe for disaster. Adair Countians discover again, in Rome, it's a small world Story remembered upon reading: How Grover proved or almost proved a legend By Charles Marshburn In 1992 on our first visit to the Vatican, people were packed inot the Sistine Chapel like sardines under the painting on the ceiling of "The Creation" by Michelangelo. There was scaffolding around the perimeter of the room for renovation and cleaning of the painting on the ceiling. My wife was next to me and she stood face to face with a lady she had worked with in Tampa, Florida, whom she had not seen for 10 years! Small world! Saint Peter's Cathedral is more massive than I could describe, but the Sistine Chapel is not that large. The coincidence floored my wife and her friend. s/Charles Marshburn 2008-11-24 01:58:35 | Comments | Printable version
