Chris Bennett: Thanks, Mr. McQueary, for teaching me to drive

About: ACHS standout Ralph McQueary also NCAA Division I player

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would just like to say that Mr Ralph McQueary may have been a great basketball player back in the day, but his true calling was teaching kids like me to drive. If it wasn't for him, I would have to walk to work every morning. Thanks for teaching me to drive, Mr McQueary!!!!!!

Theatre Review:
King Lear shakes off old cares but new ones follow close

Review of King Lear at Kentucky Repertory Theatre.
Next earlier review: Robert Stone review of Amadeus at KRT

Review by Robert Stone

King Lear opened at Kentucky Repertory Theatre Friday, November 21, with Warren Hammack in the title role.

Hammack, artistic/producing director of Horse Cave Theatre now KRT, was in Horse Cave from 1977 until his retirement in 2002. It would be easy to apply Lear's lines to him: "'tis our fast intent to shake all cares and business from our age, conferring them on younger strengths." But he has continued acting and his Lear is stunning.

King Lear is a study of the difficulty of giving up great power while trying to maintain a lesser power position. Only respect can allow a person to maintain a lesser role. Lear begins by requesting declarations of love and the gets them from his two older daughters. Later we see that their responses were hollow. His youngest daughter says she only loves him in the ways that respect requires.

Comment on updated list of Adair County NCAA Division I basketball players listed in article in Honors keep pouring in for Darren Ballou

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Kevin Bridgewater played the past two years on scholarship at the University of Tennesse at Chattanooga. I just heard from a buddy of his the other day that Kevin is on track to graduate with a double major very soon. We should be very proud of K's accomplishments.

In regards to Ralph McQueary, words can't express how grateful I am that he spent so many hours teaching me how to spin a basketball on my finger way back in high school! You are the man, Coach!

More Adair County Division I Players

Comment on updated list of Adair County NCAA Division I basketball players listed in article in Honors keep pouring in for Darren Ballou
Ed,

A couple more players:

Kevin Bridgewaters earned a scholarship to Tennessee Chattanooga after attending Junior College in Illinois. He just completed his eligibility last season at Chattanooga.

Also, Joseph Bailey, son of Carl and Jamie Bailey, earned a scholarship to Tennessee-Martin. Joseph played through his freshman year at ACHS before going to Pickett Co., TN to complete his prep career. He is currently on the roster at Tennessee Martin.

It also seems like Keenan "Redbone" Bridgewaters earned a scholarship to Western KY University, but ended up coming back to play at Campbellsville University, but I am not sure about that one, but someone else would know.

s/Scott Bennett

Thanks, Scott. We'll insert the names of Kevin Bridgewaters and Joseph Bailey into the list and wait for some more information on Redbone.

I would like to congratulate Darren for his accomplishments past, present and future. Each time an Adair Countian makes it good we all share in that glitz and glory. I am sure that Adair County and Adair Countians will share in many more of his accomplishments now, and for generations to come.

We are extremely proud of our young folks whether they excel in the public eye or whether they excel in the everyday lives of their families, friends and neighbors. Darrin, his team, and family are now role models that we all can look up to, share with, and cheer on.

Thanksgiving most dangerous holiday of year, NHTSA says

By Billy Gregory, Public Affairs Officer
Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) With fuel prices hovering around $1.85 a gallon, KSP expects increased traffic on the roadways this holiday. Thanksgiving is the most dangerous holiday of the year for motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This includes the four-day holiday driving period surrounding that date when heavy traffic, weather and long-distance road trips combine to create severe travel conditions. Often, family celebrations include alcohol, which later evolves into impaired driving. Add that to heavy holiday traffic, and you have a recipe for disaster.

State AG wants to strengthen notices on flood, collision vehicles

From the Office of Attorney General Jack Conway>

Attorney General Jack Conway has joined 42 other state attorneys general in asking the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to strengthen Buyer's Guide notices to indicate if used cars, trucks, or SUVs that are for sale have been assigned titles indicating past flood or collision damage.

Under the FTC's "Used Car Rule," Buyer's Guide notices must be posted on used vehicles for sale; however, the current rule only requires that the notices only tell prospective buyers whether the car is offered with a warranty, or is being sold "as is," without a warranty.

Adair Countians discover again, in Rome, it's a small world

Story remembered upon reading: How Grover proved or almost proved a legend

By Charles Marshburn

In 1992 on our first visit to the Vatican, people were packed inot the Sistine Chapel like sardines under the painting on the ceiling of "The Creation" by Michelangelo.

There was scaffolding around the perimeter of the room for renovation and cleaning of the painting on the ceiling.

My wife was next to me and she stood face to face with a lady she had worked with in Tampa, Florida, whom she had not seen for 10 years! Small world!

Saint Peter's Cathedral is more massive than I could describe, but the Sistine Chapel is not that large. The coincidence floored my wife and her friend.
