Wandering dog with boxer looking face on Rice Drive

There is a wandering dog on Rice Drive. It's stocky built, and tan and white with a "boxer' looking face. Very friendly. I'm afraid he's going to get hit by a car. Please contact (270) 384-2083 if you are missing your pup.

Homemaker's Bazaar a huge success

By Barbara Armitage

It seemed that most of the people of Adair and several surrounding counties all crowded in to the Extension Office in Columbia to attend the Homemaker's Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Home baked goodies and hand crafted items flew out the door with happy customers.

The morning was a whirlwind of activity. The highlight of the day of course was the much anticipated arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Flying in from the North Pole especially to visit with us Santa and his wife were welcome guests.

Wecome to Adair County, Charles Marshburn

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I too, now, call Adair County my home and welcome a fellow "not" so called because although we may call this home we will always be reminded that we are not from around here.

Charles, I have lived in many places in my life time and it's pretty much the same all over the world. Thanks to modern medicine there is now a cure for ugly but not stupidity. Stupidity goes all the way to the bone.

s/Barbara Armitage

Thanks, Barbara, but with all respect, you are in error on the assertion that one not born in Adair County will always be reminded that they are from off. Truly born again Adair Countians are more Adair Countian than the natives and accepted as such. We need cite only a few: The late Dr. James Salato (New Jersey), John Shelley (Monticello), Bernice Rickman Flowers (Hopkinsville, KY and in ca. 1972 named, along with Dr. Ores Aaron the most respected Adair Countian in The Columbia Statesman); John Burr (Toledo), James Woody (London, KY) and Emma Woody, (Ottenheim, KY), and among current very Adair Countians, John and Lucretia Begley (Mercer County, KY), and Tim Allen, director of the Adair County Band. Even my first wife, Linda, was born in Sulphur Well, KY, but is 182% Adair County now. And I must mention Adair County's longest serving, ancient, and venerated magistrate, Wid Harris (District 2), who comes from somewhere else--I forget where--and there is hardly anyone else who knows his origin, he's so much a part of the county now. Heck, thousands would bet that Grover Gilpin was born here. They don't get any more Adair County and he is. But I was told he's from Gresham. Being an Adair County native is a state of mind, not an accident of birthplace. Moreover, all these arrived before the Adair County Assimilation Academy was established. It can be done. -EW

Telling folks what not to read

During the late presidential election a question was raised about whether or not the Republican vice-presidential candidate had attempted to ban books in the city library of Wasilla, Alaska, while she was mayor.

The story went that Mayor Palin asked the city librarian how she, the librarian, would react to the directed removal of books from the library. Evidently the matter did not get any further than that. Subsequent attempts to find out just what the soccer mom had in mind were inconclusive.

Ol Joe's Barbecue Sauce main purpose in life is to enhance the taste of barbecued meats. But resourceful cooks are finding other uses for it. "One customer said she would not think of using ketchup in meatloaf again," the inventor of the miracle barbecue sauce, Joe Barbee reported.

Over the weekend, the entire supply of sauce available to the public was sold out, but Ol Joe will personally pickup up two pallets of the sauce on Monday.

By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator

Forty-two youth ministers and others interested in the field, from Kentucky and Indiana, attended the session.

The Rev. John Chowning, vice president for church and eternal relations and executive assistant to the president at Campbellsville University, presented certificates of appreciation to four youth ministers for their valued contributions to effective youth ministry among Kentucky Baptist churches.

What is significance of quilts on barns?

About: Quilt Barn on Gertrude Browning Place

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I see the quilt pattern on the barn, but what is the reason for it being on the barn? Does it have significance for this particular farm?

    s/Charles Marshburn

Sorry CM did not state the obvious. Mrs. Browning's daughter, Vicki Browning Pike, cannot abide uncouth cows. The artwork is to enrich their lives. After all, cows are people, too. If motorists along the parkway enjoy the art, that's a bonus. The quilt also has distlefinkian functions and brings good fortune, I'm sure. -EW
