Plague of urban deer endangers College Park motorists

Adair Health Department staff now on Full Deer Alert when leaving work
About: Columbia, KY, being revisited by plague of urban deer

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ed, you may well be on to something.

Just last Thursday, one of our nurses left work a few minutes ahead of the rest of us, and called back just a couple of minutes later to warn us to be on the lookout for deer: Three of them had run across College Park right in front of her car.

They came from the direction of our office, and ran through the Pyles' yard and across into the Riddles' yard on the corner of College Park and Wright Drive.

Since they may well have been travelling through our parking lot on their trip through the neighborhood, the staff here at the Adair Co. Health Department is now on full deer alert when heading to our vehicles at the end of the day.

Thanks!

Is Columbia, KY being revisited by plague of urban deer?

Accompany Shamarie Claiborne picture of bounding boy deer on Greensburg Street is beautiful. But for old timers here three years ago, it brings back horrible memories of the assault on Columbia by the infamous Old Badrack

By Ed Waggener

Shamarie Claiborne sent a photograph, which, on the first looking, appears to be one for Scenic Adair County.

However, for too many of us, the image conjures up images of the Plague of Urban Deer which occasionally menaces the town, creates excitement in barber shops, forces local gendarmes to intensify patrols, and sends the chill of primal phobias down the spines of otherwise well-balanced citizens here.

Co. Agent: Preventing black shank in tobacco

By Nick Roy, Adair Co. Extension Agent for Agricultural and Natural Resources

When it comes to diseases in burley tobacco, black shank ranks right up there at the top of the list. Losses to black shank are higher each year than all other past problems combined. During the 2008 season, statewide losses to black shank were high, but did not reach the levels of 2007. Part of the reason for that was the widespread use of resistant varieties across Kentucky.
