The James F. Harpers share five great old house photos

Click on headline to see this story with all five of the homes

Jamie Harper White, the daughter of James F. Harper and Donna Marcum Harper, sent five photos of grand old Columbia residences. The photos are in James F. and Donna Harper's family photographic collection.

The photographs are of these houses:
  1. House of James Francis Montgomery and wife Elizabeth Moore Montgomery. Bruce Montgomery was born at this housein 1882 on December 10. The photo has a woman, possibly Sally Montgomery, in the yard

  2. House built for John Lee Walker. Bruce Montgomery and Kate Walker lived her after they married. They later bought it in the early 1920s.

  3. Home of Bruce and Kate Montgomery on Greensburg Street, built about 1929. The home was where Jimmy (James F.) Harper was born. The picture shows Kate Montgomery and Mont Page on the steps.

  4. Home of John Lee and Mary R. Walker on Jamestown Street

  5. House on the corner of Wall & Greensburg Street. It was the home of Allen Walker at the time.
The information above, Jamie White says, is what was on the back of each of the photographs. Any additional information about the residents, the residences, datesm or other interesting information is welcome and will be considered for inclusion in this account.

Of Writers and Their Books. No. 183 The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
Last week's column: Tony Hillerman 1925-2008 essay on late author

    By Tom Chaney

Of Crickets and Field Mice and Murder Most Foul

Several of us were sitting around the big table at the Bookstore last week when we noticed a visitor. A little field mousie stuck his nose out around the soft drink machine and looked up at us as though we had failed to feed him lunch or to invite him to join our conversation. We spoke; he turned up his nose, shrugged his shoulders, flicked his tail and ambled off to where food used to be.

Although he (or perhaps, she) was in no way pestiferous, I called the local pest folks and ordered some field mice food -- heavily spiced.

Great Backyard Bird Count starts in just 90 days

Thanks to George Kolbenschlag and Sue Stivers for sending this news release. Last year, Columbia was one of the top reporting communities in Kentucky. Sue Stivers thinks that with some planning, Columbia will be the top GBBC town in Kentucky--maybe even in the United States!

BIRDS OF KENTUCKY: CAROLINA WREN: Tony Harvey of the Tabor Community on Scenic KY 704 south of Columbia, captured this picture in September 2007, and wrote, at the time, "A Carolina Wren, which is one of the more tame birds, is known for being very vocal. They are common around rural areas of KY. They will build their nest in just about anywhere. Easily visible at your feeder, bird bath, or in flower gardens etc."

School groups, libraries, postal workers, 4-H groups, church groups, outdoor exercisers, civic clubs, local governments--every Adair Countiancan help in 2009

New York, NY and Ithaca, NYBird and nature fans throughout North America are invited to join tens of thousands of everyday bird watchers for the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), February 13-16, 2009.
