Redbuds seedlings, all 2,000, are here. Handout underway today

Two thousand redbuds have arrived at the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce Office, located at 201 Burkesville Street, in Columbia, KY.

The redbud sedlings give away started today, Monday, April 7, 2008, beginning at 1:30pmCT. Bring with you any kind of plastic bag, such as a grocery bag, or newspapers or anything you choose to cover the roots when you take your redbuds home with you.

The redbuds are given through a grant from Tour Southern Kentucky as a part of its Scenic Byway program.

The redbuds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Obituary: Mary Rodgers Napier, 85, dies in Indiana

She was a native of Adair, a member of a respected Portland area family

Mary Rodgers Napier, 85, Mooresville, IN, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Mooresville, IN.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 7:00pmET/6:00pmCT at Carlisle & Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville, IN, with visitation from 4-7pmET/3-6pmCT.

Commital service will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at 1:00pmCT at Tarter's Chapel Cemetery in Adair County with Bro. Herbert Janes officiating. Burial will follow.

Group hopes to organize CROP event here to fight world hunger

Columbia and Adair County church, community, and college leaders will have a chance to learn how to hold a CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) event to raise money to relieve world hunger following Judy Dunson's lecture on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

The discussion will follow Judy Dunson's lecture, a part of the Lindsey Wilson Civic Involvement Series, which starts at 4:00pmCT, April 14, 2008 in the Thomas Clark Reading Room in the Katie Murrell Library, Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY, next Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

Judy Dunson will also be available for a breakfast meeting on April 16, 2008.

Free Jazz concert at Gheens Recital Hall April 10, 2008

Campbellsville University's Jazz Ensemble will present a concert Thursday, April 10, 2008, in The Gheens Recital Hall of the Gosser Fine Arts Center.

Jen Tinnell, director of the jazz ensemble, said, "The Campbellsville University Jazz Ensemble will present an exciting program featuring a variety of jazz styles sure to please every music enthusiast."

She said, "Whether you enjoy swing, boogie woogie, bebop or cool jazz, you are sure to hear some great music and have a toe-tapping good time."

The program starts at 7pmCT/8pmET and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the School of Music office at (270) 789-5237.

The Columbia Spring Derby at the Adair County Fairgrounds was another huge success, with a crowd estimated at over 5,000 in attendance Saturday, April 5, 2008.

The big winner of the Big Car derby was Dennis Petty, who took home the biggest trophy and $3,000 in cash, presented by Jaycee members Rodney Ford and Ray Rowe.
