Commentary: Burning fossil fuels is poisoning eco-system By Tony Harvey I would like to take issue with the reader's response about the need for drilling in Alaska. While yes we seem to have ourselves painted into the proverbial corner, in regards to the price of crude oil and the consumption of it in our great united states. The real issue here isn't trying to find the proper land to drill on for oil, the issue is what are we doing to reduce the consumption of oil. While gas prices are rising and there seems to no end in sight in the near future. We are burning more and more fossil fuels, which in turn are poisoning our eco-system world wide. Letter: Writer is impatient with Road Eighty Bridge work But construction company is meeting deadlines, others say; see note, below To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Contracts that I have to sign doing commercial work always have a stipulation and penalty for not completing my work before a due date. I would be curious to know if the contractor on the East 80 bridge would have the same in their contract. My penalties range from $500 to $1200 a day for holding up progress. If the bridge contractors do indeed have such a stipulation would the state transportation department be willing to share the penalty received? I think it would be too difficult to try to divide the proceeds to those whom it has affected the most. Maybe a fair way would be to simply deposit into the county road fund. I am fairly confident that no penalties will be charged or collected. Nonteheless I am getting so aggravated of the hassle and cost that this construction delay has caused myself and others. s/Bob Barnes Your concern is appreciated. However, it is our understanding that, however slow progress may seem to be on the bridge construction, the contractor is continues completely up to date so far as the contract stipulates. If anyone knows differently, let us know. -EW 2008-03-27 08:27:54 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
