Tom Chaney: On things country ham and Gov. Clements

For Christmas breakfast, he advises to obtain ham "by whatever means available"
By Tom Chaney

Christmas at our house meant country ham.

Our father, Boots Chaney, bought hams from his friends and insurance customers all over the territory. The little closet at the back of the Withers Chaney and Green insurance agency (Before You Die, Buy, Burn or Blow Away, See Us]) was storage for blank insurance policy forms and hanging hams. Every insurance policy smelled faintly of ham at no additional cost.

He also sold the hams. I recall that his selling price was exactly the same as his buying price. Those hams of my youth were not the piddling little ones available now from Clifty Farms, Coon Creek, or even Penn's which do well to top seventeen pounds or so. The hanging insurance hams tended to be in the thirty to forty pound size.

Knifley, KY celebrates success of massive search for Casey boy

In the end, Knifley firefighters locate the boy, but not before a massive all night operation involving 17 units from four counties came to community's aid Friday night and Saturday morning. Extensive list of the units participating below.

By Jason Rector
Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

It took an all night effort to find him, but at aproximately 4:30amCT, Saturday morning, December 15, 2007, Knifley firefighters John Martin, Lieutenant Jason Upchurch and Constable Jason Rector located the 13-year-old Casey County Juvenile, at a residence in Roley.

He was safe and sound.

The search for the missing boy had begun at 9:15pmCT, Friday night, when Assistant Fire Chief Jason Rector received a report that the boy, from Woods Creek Road neighborhood of Clementsville was missing.

Community spirt was high. Darrell and Gayla Baker even opened their business to accommodate the searchers who needed gas, food, and supplies as the search continued throughout the night.

In fact, the successful search is thanks to both an enthusiastic community pulling together with the Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department and and the coming together of numerous local and surrounding county emergency agencies assistance who converged on the Knifley-Roley-Clementsville area to conduct the concerted effort it took to find the missing youth.
