Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Lesson from Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor, reprinted with the author's permission. A December 25, 2005 column which originally appeared in the Hart County Herald, Munfordville, KY
By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

WHEN IT ISN'T THE BEST COURSE TO STAY THE COURSE

John (1703-1791) and Charles (1707-1788) Wesley were two religiously earnest brothers among the group of devout young men at Oxford University in the early 1700's who were derided as being the Holy Club or the Methodists. Their peers thought that the members of the group were too dedicated to their faith, too disciplined to be real.

The title of Methodist stuck and became a badge of honor, and the Wesleys sparked a religious revival in England that took on a new life among the British colonies in America. John was the leading organizer and preacher among the Methodists, while Charles recorded its major beliefs in thousands of hymn texts, serving as the poet of the Wesleyan revival. Charles Wesley's hymns were used by many different groups of Christians who sometimes took the words and altered them to suit their own needs.
