Gas Price Drumbeat: Thinks Chamber should help

To the editor:

I recently had a conversation with an employee of an oil company distributor with a presence in Adair County. He basically told me that gas is higher in Columbia than Campbellsville because of Wal-Mart and Kroger. He indicated that the prices would come down here if we had a Wal-Mart or Kroger that sold gas.

I made the statement that the oil companies are making an exorbitant profit off their customers in Adair as compared with surrounding areas. He agreed that they are not making as much profit in the counties surrounding Adair.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Today, AC paying $2,000 extra a tanker

ColumbiaMagazine.com

Lots of people have called me, most say they never buy gas in Town because of the price difference. Average difference 22 cents a gallon. That is almost $2000 per tanker load. Just figure how much that is a year for the county.

s/Gerald Doss

Roughly $2,268,100 extra a year at today's price differential? That's a new elementary school in 5-6 years. -CM

Gas Price Drumbeat: Every extra 1 costs county a bundle

If Adair County's 18,000 citizens each average the KY average usage of 12 barrels of gasoline (x44 for gallons) per year, that's 9,504,000 gallons, or roughly 10 million gallons (to make the math easier) of gasoline consumed here each year.

Here's one way of looking at what higher gas price differentials costs Adair County, if the above assumptions are correct:
  • A 1 per gallon costs the rest of the Adair Co. economy, annually, $100,000
  • A 10 per gallon costs the rest of the Adair Co. economy, annually, $1 Million
  • A 25 costs the rest of the Adair Co. economy, annually, $2.500,000
  • A 50 per gallon costs the rest of the Adair Co. economy, annually, $5,000,000
The highest differential, 50 per gallon, would build a library in one year, or a new elementary school, bus garage, and music building in three, just to put the matter in perspective.Comments on the premise, above, of consumption of three tankers a day, 9,000 gallons per tanker, and the other math is welcome.

Letter: Columbia SDA sends boxes to Samaritan Purse

To ColumbiaMagazine.com readers:

It was our privilege to work with Samaritan Purse to pack shoe boxes for needy children for Christmas. The drop off dates are actually this week, but we brought ours in early to a residence site in Campbellsville. If others are interested in this kind of a project more information can be found at www.samaritanspurse.org and click on "Operation Christmas Child."

You may be aware of this program directed by Billy Graham's son, Franklin Graham. Our Columbia SDA Elementary School is small, but we managed to pack about eight boxes of donated toys and goodies that are on the "allowable" list and which can fit in a shoe box.
