Tom Chaney, November 11, 2007: Dick Francis

AROUND THE TRACK ONCE MORE
Of Writers and their Books: Book review of Dead Heat, by Dick Francis

By Tom Chaney

Dick Francis is out of the gate astride his 40th racing novel. This time around he shares author billing with his son Felix who has heretofore declined to be so listed. But for Dead Heat the publishers insisted upon co-authorship since health problems shifted much of the work of writing the novel onto the shoulders of Felix. I wrote here about a year ago upon publication of Under Orders that Felix had taken over much of the research duties once performed by his mother, whose death in 2000 led to a six-year break in the string of Dick Francis novels.

I can report that father and son are working well in harness together.

Dr. Rick Rowe comments on CM, publishing history

Ed:

Congratulations on ColumbiaMagazine. Your site is well designed and seems to certainly be informative, especially about Columbia/Adair events and happenings.

However, the thing that really stands out to me is the quality of your photographs. They definitely add a unique and appealing element to your publication. If there are other local publications with this type of eye catching attention grabbers, I am unaware of them.

I believe Columbia has a great tradition of publishing excellence which continues on to this day in the local newspapers and other print venues.

LWC Plant Operations: A great bunch doing great job

One photograph accompanies this article
To ColumbiaMagazine.com,

I so enjoy looking at Columbia Magazine and the many stories and photos. I have listed events and military on your site before but today I just wanted to put a picture and a little info to go with it. I have been working at Lindsey Wilson College in Plant Operations since May of this year. In this time I have met or been reunited with people I grew up with.

This is the greatest bunch of people to work with. When you look at Lindsey Wilson and admire the beauty of the landscaping or the cleanliness of the campus or if you were to walk thru one of the buildings and see all the work that has gone on in them, you have the people of this department to thank for it.

Comment: Parade Colorguard was Russell County NROTC

Ed:

That's not only an ROTC unit leading the LWC homecoming parade, it''s an NROTC unit. The N stands for NAVY. As an old sailor I think it's significant that land-locked Russell County High School has a NROTC unit.

s/George Kolbenschlag

Thanks. The caption is changed. The letter was written before CM used the information to update the photo caption. Click here to see "LWC 2007 Homecoming Parade: Russell County HS NROTC."

Veterans day celebration Nov. 11, 2007, in Edmonton
The Veterans Dayceremony in Edmonton will be at 2:00pm, Sunday, November 11, 2007. It is tentatively scheduled for outside on the courthouse yard, but we are concerned about the cold on some of the veterans and their families. So we are looking at going inside the Historical Courthouse should the temperature be below a comfortable level. Immediately after the ceremonies a documentary titled "The League of Grateful Sons" will be shown at the VFW Post and refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this screening. It will well be worth your time. We would like to have as many WWII veterans and their families present as possible. -CHARLES COSTELLO.
