Outbreaks of resistant forms of staph infections have been making the news around the country in recent weeks. This highly contagious infection comes from the staphylococcus aureus bacteria that are normally found on the skin.

The resistant strain recently appeared in schools, day care centers and other areas where people congregate. The resistant form is known as Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, meaning it is resistant to certain antibiotics. Previously it was found primarily in medical facilities, such as nursing homes and hospitals.

(ADV) Family wants Atticus back

2007-11-07 - Photo From Robertson Family album.

ABOVE, ATTICUS of the pair, Atticus and Maudie
OUR FAMILY PETS were taken from our neighborhood, Churchill Place off East 80, on Saturday by the dog catcher. They were then taken to the Green River Animal Shelter where they were adopted on Monday and Tuesday morning. Our family is really attached to these dogs, but since they were adopted, we were told that we have no rights to them. We have three children who are devasted and are begging to get them back. I am including photos, and a plea that whoever adopted them would please return our dogs. You can contact us at (270) 634-4658, (270) 634-4659, or at (270) 384-6033.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Calls on Chamber to help

To readers, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

"A Concerned Citizen" is correct in stating that we spend money where gasoline prices are cheaper. After filling up at a neighboring town for 16 cents a gallon less than Columbia's price, I went shopping and bought groceries, shoes, clothes, garden tools, building supplies and pet food.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Can't remember buying gas here

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am a resident of Adair County, but work in Russell Springs. I also spend a great deal of time traveling northward to Indiana. I couldn' tell you the last time that I purchased gasoline in Columbia. Why would I pay extra when I can get it much cheaper somewhere else? I bought gas for $2.87 Sunday evening 12 miles from my home! These local businesses need to realize that if we don't purchase gasoline here in Columbia then there is a big chance that we are also spending money for other items elsewhere.

s/A concerned citizen
(Name and contact information on file)

Editor's note: It seems apparent that the local merchants and independent local gas retailers know that the differential charged in Columbia really hurts the local economy. We prefer to continue to buy locally rather than out of town, but can understand why so many feel otherwise. -EW
