In Adair, a GOP sweep; Governor gets 67.74% of vote

Republicans carry every precinct for every office by wide margins. ALL Election charts, all 16 precinct votes + absentee votes now listed. All important order of arrival in the race to get results tot the Courthouse Annex below.

By Ed Waggener
ColumbiaMagazine.com story

It was a day for Democrats to celebrate regaining the governorship, but the Adair County Republican Party delivered almost 68% of the General Election vote for Gov. Ernie Fletcher in today's balloting. The figure was one of the three highest in the state, in terms of percentage or plurality. It was a major personal victory for Adair County Judge Ann Melton, who had made the governor's race a high priority. Governor Fletcher carried the absentees and all 16 precincts by overwhelming majorities.

The Adair County Republican Party went counter to most of the state results, and in a very impressive manner, carrying every precinct and all absentee voting for every office contested.

In the District 1 Magisterial Race, Republican Danny Goodin defeated independent Gene Dale Holmes to take the seat left vacant by the resignation of Republican Roger Stephens. Goodin can be sworn in as soon as his election is certified.

In Columbia, Councillor Joe Moore, who was unopposed in his overtime race, polled 599 votes.

The complete countywide totals follow. Precinct by precinct vote totals and absentee will be added during the next few hours.

Gas price gouging case against Marathon/Speedway, proceeding

From Commonwealth News Center
Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

Attorney General Greg Stumbo's price gouging case seeking $89 million in damages from Marathon Oil is moving through state court. Franklin Circuit Court Judge Tom Wingate today entered an Agreed Order directing Marathon to answer outstanding discovery requests by November 19, 2007.

"The judge is moving us closer to our day in court, when we will ask a jury to say whether Marathon's pricing was grossly excessive as America weathered hurricanes and turmoil," Stumbo said. "This is the very reason that the price gouging law was enacted, and my Office of Consumer Protection will see that it protects all Kentuckians from predatory oil pricing."

Attorney General Greg Stumbo filed groundbreaking litigation in Franklin Circuit Court in May 2007 against Marathon Oil Corporation, Marathon Petroleum Company, LLC and Speedway SuperAmerica, LLC charging the corporations with profiteering during the time of emergency following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Gas Price Watch: Columbia winner(?) again

Ed:

I just checked kygas prices and found Columbia to be a winner again. We are on the list of the highest prices in the state. I was just in Somerset and found the price 14 cents a gallon lower than Columbia. Stopped by Russell Springs and found them 21 cents a gallon lower. We won (or lost) depending on how you look at it. Glasgow is still 31 cents a gallon lower than we are.

Kizzie Russell wanted a wrought iron fence around cemetery

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com
Please change the date on the information given for the church marker. As the sign says, the balcony was removed in 1885 not 1865 which would have been the end of the war. It took a while to decide to remove the balcony, I guess.

I am glad for the interest in the cemetery. Alta Garnett has told me it was a beautiful entrance. She also told me the cemetery was a bramble patch, which can be seen behind Earl Conover (PHOTO).
