Iron Gate at Columbia Cemetery

2007-11-05 - Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY - Photo From the collection of Dawn DeHarte.
DAWN DeHARTE hopes she's solved the mystery of the iron gate at the Columbia Cemetery. It may have been installed well after the 1920s photo of Earl Conover on the steps. Cyrus clears up mystery; the word is devise

The mystery word in the photo of Earl Conover at the entrance to the Columbia Cemetery in the 1920's has been identified.

Ann Curtis has learned, through the scholarship of the man of mystery, Cyrus, that the mystery word is "devise."

She says there is still a mystery about an iron gate or arch at this entrance. Her mother used to speak of such a gate, but it isn't in evidence here. Maybe it came later. If anyone knows, please send to ColumbiaMagazine.com with the Contact/Submit

Letter: Happy someone coming up with ideas

To the editor

My wife and I took our son Wichita to the Lan Warz cafe located on Jamestown Street in the Robertson Pool building. We were very impressed and think that this is a positive place for our children to hang out. I am happy that someone is coming up with ideas to keep our children off the streets, and possibly out of trouble.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Just can't believe the difference

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Yesterday I was going to E-town. First I drove through town to check gas prices. The lowest was $3.08, most $3.09.I then went to Campbellsville. One of the stations (we have one in Columbia with same name) was $2.78. Just up the road a short distance another one with a local station of the same name, the price $2.87. In Hodgenville and E-town prices were just over $3.00. I can't imagine it costs that much more to haul gas 20 more miles.Meantime, this morning on kygas.com Prices remain $2.87, Glasgow; as well as Campbellsville, which had the the same price, $2.87.

Our land is honored

"How rare it is to encounter a writer ... who finds the world more compelling than the self. McCombs is just such a paragon." Four readers send more information on early Columbia photo

Betty Sue Jasper's photo of the old bridge with her late father, Earl Conover, as a little boy in the 1920s, drew a big response. Four readers, Steve Hancock, Hunter Durham, and George Rice, all of Columbia, KY and Columbia native Ann Curtis, California, have responded to the question which accompanied the wonderful old photo shared by photographer Betty Sue Jasper. The photo carried note seeking more information:

"Betty Sue says: My dad, Earl Conover back in the early 1920's. This looks like it might have been taken at the Columbia City Cemetery. Maybe someone can help me out with the location. . . Could this be a shot of the house across the street from the Cemetary? Compare to this older shot from our archives."
