When rising fuel costs curtailed student field trips, innovative Adair County teachers found other alternatives to offer students meaningful field work, a walk away from classrooms, right on the Adair County School District campus, with some great added benefits
By Debbie Bradshaw
Three years ago, gas prices began to soar. Classroom teachers had to cut back on field trips due to unreasonably high gas prices.

As classroom teachers themselves, Sheila Willis and I knew the importance for meaningful field trips and decided students and teachers needed other alternatives.

Festival dance had cars lined from square to schools

Photos accompany this article
By Ed Waggener

It will be remembered as a turnaround event for Columbia for years to come.

Downtown Days would have been a huge success without "Dancing with the Stars," but with it, the two days of fall fun made it spectacular.

It took everybody by surprise, especially Rhonda Loy, who, with Sonya Roy, Gina Campbell, Chasity Yarberry, and Jada Coomer headed the Renaissance Columbia organizers of the event. "I expected 150 people," she said. "I freaked when I saw the crowd and knew I had to get out in front of that many people. It was like the nervousness I always had when I was in the band."

But she couldn't have done better. Mayor Pat Bell said. "Rhonda is now our Events Planner. "I saw her lead. I saw her communicate. I saw her solve problems. She kept things going." Rhonda is an employee at City Hall, so the Mayor knows her on a day to day basis.

I believe it's worth mentioning that two of Adair's adjoining counties also did well on Saturday! The Russell County Mighty Laker Band placed 3rd and the Taylor County Band was 5th. They will also be heading to Louisville for the State Semi-Finals Competition on Saturday.
