Letter: A confirmation of Adair Once / Always doctrine

About: Adair County veterans list grows by three names

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to send my thanks for adding my dad to the list. I stand by the saying: Once an Adair Countian always an Adair Countian

I miss seeing all the familiar faces of what I call my hometown. I still have ties in the county and I would actually like for it to be my final resting place.

Windstream brings Green Truck, big gift to Columbia

Adair Fire Department receives floating dock dump, which can be used to fight houseboat fires on Green River Lake; effort part of major promotion to promote Windstream's position on the safety and reliability of landline phones in face of new competition from cell, voice-over-internet cable providers

By Ed Waggener

The Adair County Fire Department, after many years without a functioning Waterous Floto-Pump, or floating dock pump, now has one, thanks to Windstream Communications. With celebratory fanfare, Windstream personnel rolled into town with an Windstream Green cargo van and the world famous Green Truck, the company's trademarked symbol made the presentation of the floating platform pump.

Thank You: Lindsey Wilson College

By Patty Jones, Principal, Colonel William Casey Elementary School

As principal of a local elementary school, I want to add my thanks to the students, faculty and staff at Lindsey Wilson College. During the past decade our partnership with the college has grown stronger on a yearly basis.

Col. Wm. Casey and the education department at LWC have had a strong partnership for many years. Dr. Larry Ennis, and Asst. Principal, Laura Murrell work together as a team to ensure the success of this program. Each semester students in the department are assigned to a primary teacher at our school. Those students work collaboratively with their assigned teacher to gain knowledge for themselves and provide knowledge to both our staff and students. Most then go on to student teach at our school. I might add that many of those students are now fully certified teachers on staff at Casey.

Feedback: Julia Ann story brings back memories of Rialto

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

The Julia Ann Pickett story brings back memories of the Rialto "picture show." I was very happy when, on Saturday afternoon, I had a quarter to attend movies like "Old Yeller."

I think the admission price was 15 cents, and popcorn (served in a paper cone) and drinks were 5 cents each.

The Rialto was owned by the F. X. Merkley family, and I believe it was located about where Wanda Hill's office is in the Bank of Columbia.

A faithful reader sends more on the Courthouse, scrollwork

About: Scrollwork in basket are french curves

Ed,

That's Hudson, William Henry HUDSON, not Judson.

The mark of the beast according to the NIV Bible footnotes and other commentaries I've read referred to imperial Rome.

It is in Revelations and the writer, John, is trying to tell the Christians that they should not worship the emperor although that was the order given and people could be executed for not worshipping the emperor.

About: Scenic Adair County: 666? No, thinks Old Coddger

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com

I just love all of Old Coddger's pictures. Well: the sign of the beast issue: This iron work design is not at all three sixes.

In classical architectural design these curly Qs in question are classified as french curves. In iron work this is a simple task, but for stone masonry a little more difficult rendering to accomplish.

Feedback: Add Marvina Farkle Day to LWC service to Adair Co.

About: Willis Pooler cites many areas of LWC athletics local involvement

Hi Ed,

I just want to add Marvina Farkle Day to Willis Pooler's list. Each year LWC holds an annual Marvina Farkle Day which is a day of community service.

Having participated in several of them, I can tell you it is a lot of work - not all pretty, but the students, faculty and staff love doing it. They pick up trash on the roadways, plant flowers, paint buildings, assist daycares, schools and eldercare. The list goes on and on.

Hi, Ed:This is Aimee Darnell, Alan Reed's daughter. My husband and I just returned from an Alaskan cruise, where we celebrated our first anniversary!I wanted to share some photos with you. They include a site so perfect you can't believe it's real, a photo taken in Ketchikan, Alaska, a neat little fishing village, a trainride along the White Pass & Yukon Route, and glacier ice in tracy Arm Fjord.
