2007-08-14 - Columbia, KY - Photo From the collection of Bily Conn; photo by Joseph Allison.
BILLY CONN found this great photo of a birthday party, which he thinks took place in 1948 to 1950. A request was made for help in identifying the group. A number of people have sent names, but the complete list, which follows, was sent by the birhday honoree herself: Julia Pickett Thompson. It was her birthday party in the big yard at home. The location was the home of her parents, Ellis and Mary Welch Miller Pickett, at the southeast corner of Guardian and Monroe Streets, where the Brad Conovers live today. From left, by face in photo: Bradley Jeffries, Ronnie Sewell, Jimmy Flowers, Gordon Kelsey, Patti Rowe (Noll), Danny Hadley, Richard Royce, Billy Fred Hughes, Donnie Howell (can just see two little eyes peeking out), Julia Pickett (Thompson), Charlotte Cheatham (Krauss), Jimmy Marshall, Charles Lynnwood Gore, Benny Burr (with recent haircut by Julia Pickett), Billy Conn, Mary Jane Young, J.M Shelley, Sharon Kelsey: Last row, from left:Pauline Cheatham, holding Brenda Cheatham (McQueary); Mrs. Howell holding little Terry Howell; Lady Unknown with child; Effie Heskamp, holding Ann Sutton Heskamp, Irene (Mrs. Clyde) Marshall, Lady and child on end (unknown). Some more lessons from childhood

re: A lesson in parenting, stewardship, and fighting litter
To the editor, CM

As a child my mother taught me the same lesson.I made the mistake of throwing a banana peel out on Burkesville St. She immediately stopped the car and I had to get out and walk back to pick it up.

I believe that every citizen of Columbia saw me that day. If they didn't they missed their only chance.

Tom Chaney: August 14, 2007, Lincoln

OF WRITERS & THEIR BOOKS:
Book Reviews: A novelist and an historian look at Abraham Lincoln
By Tom Chaney

Two views of Abraham Lincoln have engaged my interest in the past couple of months. I have mentioned Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln [Simon & Schuster, 2005]. The second, a novel I have read at least once in the past, is Gore Vidal's Lincoln [Random House, 1984].

I have long been interested in the divide between history and fiction. As I was reading Goodwin, I began to remember Vidal and the pleasure with which I continue to read his work. Then I went back to Vidal and was struck by the enrichment each provided the other.

Frank Dickerson thinks school board records will have answer

re: The Lost Year of Knifley HS 1952-1953
To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Mr. Doss raises a good question about the 1952~1953 Knifley HS Class. I don't have the answer, but the Adair Board of Education's meticulous records should reveal the answer.

Important historical events need to be addressed, so let's hear it from the Board of Education.

Thanks!
