ACS Department destroys marijuana in Knifley area On August 6, 2007, the Adair County Sheriff's Department located and destroyed approximately 25 marijuana plants. The plants were located in the Knifley Area. A investigation is continuing in the matter. Malfunction said to be cause of serious KY 61 injury accident One driver taken to airlifted to UK Medical Center after treatment at Westlake; one passenger taken to Westlake and flown directly from the helipad there to UL Hospital in Louisville, KY, another being transported to UK Medical Center by ambulance from Westlake A vehicle malfunction was given as the reason for a head-on collision on KY 61 just before noon today which resulted in serious injuries, with one of the injured being flown to the University of Louisville. The accident occurred immediately in front of Garrison Construction Company at Clay Ridge, 7 miles north of Columbia. Traffic was stopped on the road for approximately 45 minutes, as KSP, and EMS Units from Adair and Green Counties were on the scene. The accident occurred just before noon today, Monday, August 5, 2007, at 11:40. Albany man flown to Knoxville following construction zone crash An Albany, KY man, Howard Rector, 63, was flown to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville after the 2003 Chevy S 10 was rear ended by a 1998 Freightliner operated by Peter Heide, 37, Ontario, Canada. Obituary: Lawrence Arthur Allen, 85 He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, in Knoxville, TN; and a member of the Civil War Round Table and the American Chemical Society. He had retired after 40 years service as chemical engineer with Union Carbide. Mr. Allen was the father of Adair County Band Director Tim Allen. Lawrence Arthur "Larry" Allen, 85, Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1922, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred S. Allen, and the father of Adair County High School Band Director Tim Allen, Columbia, KY. ACPL to host Family Literacy Program Aleina Milligan, Children's Librarian, will serve as host for "Prime Time Family Reading Time" which begins Tuesday, August 14 and continues every Tuesday through September 18, 2007 The Adair County Public Library has recieved a grant from the Louisana Endowment for the Hummanities (LEH), to host a family literacy program in Columbia, Kentucky. The program, Prime Time Family Reading Time, targets children aged 6 to 10 and their parents in an effort to foster a lifelong love of learning through reading, Aleina Milligan, Children's Librarian and Prime Time Site Coordinator, says. Officials urge caution in extreme heat Look in on elderly neighbors, CJE asks Temperatures will range from 95 to 100 today, Monday, August 6, through Thursday, August 9, 2007. A heat advisory is in effect for counties west of Adair County, from noon today until 5pm CT. Adair County Judge Ann Melton and EMD Greg Thomas would like to caution the citizens of Adair County to please exercise caution when working outdoors, and to drink plenty of liquids if they must be or work outdoors during the extreme heat. "If you have a elderly neighbor or friend without air conditioning, please check in on them," Judge Melton said. Big Red, WKU mascot, one of six nationalist finalists For the second year in a row, Western Kentucky University mascot Big Red is a finalist for the Mascot Hall of Fame. Big Red is one of six collegiate mascots on the ballot, joining Brutus Buckeye (Ohio State), The Ibis (Miami), Lil Red (Nebraska), Smokie (Tennessee) and Sparty (Michigan State). Deputy Mike Burton makes arrest in 4-wheeler case On Sunday August 5, 2007, at 1:15am CT, Michael Burton with the Adair County Sheriff's Department received a call from the 911 center advising there were two males walking up Hwy 206 about 2 miles up in the roadway. Upon arrival Deputy Burton observed a white male pushing a 4-wheeler in the roadway and the second male ran off into a near by cornfield.
