Scenic Adair County: Farm on Damron Creek near Eunice

2007-08-05 - Damron Creek Road, District 1, Adair County - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The cattle on the Floyd Roy farm knew to get in the shade as temperatures got into the 90s today. This beautiful scene is from Damron Creek Road looking toward Floyd Roy Road in District One near Eunice, KY. Damron Creek Road runs to Russell County and comes out on US 127. There's one creek to ford, over in Russell County. A new bridge over Damron Creek makes passage on the Adair County side very easy. The road has some of the prettiest scenes in either Adair or Russell Counties.

Letter: Thanks to Margaret Carney for stirring up memories

Writer calls former Barnett's Creek neighbor, now living in Texas, from California . . . showing how much 'our little world continues to shrink'
To Editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks to you and to Margaret Carney for stirring up more memories of our Knifley High School days.

I was pleased to see Victoria Martin-Ellis in the class of '47-'48, and was prompted to give her a call in Texas.
Vicky was my next door neighbor at Barnett's Creek, and we had a nice long chat about our "salad days" on the Creek and at KHS.

Hello Ed, CM,

The trip budget is up if you want to look at it. We managed to do the trip right on target. We budgeted $1000.00 each and only went over by about $30.00 each. Pretty good for the trip that was taken and as much as was seen.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Part II - Reinhold Niebuhr

Another Angle, the occasional musing so of a Kentucky pastor
This essay first appeared in The Hart County News, Munfordville, KY, on August 28, 2005. Reprinted here with the author's permission.
(Author's note: I wrote this well before the 2006 brouhaha over the movie of The da Vinci Code and the widespread fear that it was a dangerous - and serious -attack on Christianity. I hold to my original estimation of Dan Brown's work as beingoften inaccurate potboiler fiction. Anyone who treats his books and filmasprofound theologydeserving censorship and boycottsis giving these thrillersmore credence than they deserve. Sometimes when we try to boycott or eradicate something, we bestow upon it the status of martyr and give it far more attention than it would ever receive otherwise.)
By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

A GIANT IN THE REALM OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT - PART II
Dan Brown, the fabulously successful author of The da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, fills his books with fascinating historical, artistic, scientific and theological details. He uses so many cultural minutiae that loads of people have taken to the belief that the thrillers and their plots must all be factual. Wrong! The books are, at heart, clever potboiler fiction, and sometimes even Browns bits of trivia are off-base. For example, on page 169 of Angels and Demons, two main characters make conversational reference to the traditional Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, and one begins to quote it as, God, grant me strength to accept those things I cannot change. It is a fine prayer and a wonderful thought, but St. Francis had nothing to do with it, and the author even misquotes its opening words.

Jim Chapman: Columbia . . . will always be where I'm from

A picture of homeplace being razed was painful, but there's a happy ending for one treasured element, the swing, which still provides summer pleasure as it did when hung on the porch of the Robert & Lucille Chapman home on Jamestown Street many years ago
By Jim Chapman

It was a sad day for me when my sister Sue, of Columbia, forwarded to me, your article and pictures of our childhood Columbia home being razed. Although painful to see, it made me wish that I could have been there to see the tear down. Along with our parents, five of us, as kids, lived there, attending Columbia schools.

Kim Perkins solves mystery in 1948 KHS senior trip photo

To the editor, CM

I know who the "unknown person" in the Knifley High School Senior trip photo is--it's my Mom--Ludora Feese Perkins. She is standing next to her sister, Maudie Feese.

She was not a member of this class. She was a driver of one of the vehicles on this field trip.

s/Kim Perkins
The identification has been added to the Margaret Carney photo "A favorite picture from Knifley High School Senior trip 1948"
