Drivers take note: Back to School Time is near

Transportation Cabinet urges drivers to be cautious and watch for buses

With students heading back to school soon in most locations across the state, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is reminding drivers to use extreme caution once school buses return to local roads.

"We cannot over emphasize how important it is for motorists to watch out for stopped school buses," Secretary Bill Nighbert said. "There is always an adjustment period for drivers when classes resume, as they get used to school bus routes and stops that haven't been there for the past few months. Drivers need to be extremely attentive as they share the road with school buses."

History: Remembering Cave Ridge

It was named by Joseph Alexander Turner. Cave Ridge is an important landmark in this part of the state, from Indian times on. It was marking place on the old Road Eighty route for Adair Countians to Glasgow, to Newberry's, Howard Clinic, and the tobacco markets. But since the LBN opened 35 years ago, it isn't come to mind so much. But it is still important to Adair County history. The Bank of Columbia robbers were overnight there before executing their infamous deed
Reprinted with permission from "Senior Quest Magazine," Edmonton

By Geniece Marcum

When early settlers first came to what is now known as Cave Ridge, Kentucky, in southwestern Metcalfe County, the area was already an important landmark in the vicinity.

The Bottomses: Richard Hovious spots huge gap in Veterans List

Knifley's Marion and Ider Bottoms had four sons who served in World War II. Writer remembers the day at Knifley HIgh School when news came of Edward's death. When he was killed in action
By Richard Hovious

I just noticed a rather large group missing from the veterans list: Janice Holt Giles wrote extensively about Marion and Ider Bottoms in 40 Acres and No Mule (Pages148-154).

Marion and Ider (both good friends) had four sons who served in WWII---Janice writes a lot about Edward, who was killed in action (Herman Chelf was at his side when this happened), Robert Bottoms ("Humpy") and Jackie and Jimmy (twins) also served in WWII.

Reader: Support AC Flame softball team!

Dear Columbia Magazine.Com,

I think we as Adair Countians need to get behind our girls softball team going to the regionals in Ohio. I realize that most as well as myself will be unable to go to Ohio to support our team in person, but we need to show our pride here at home! I think we need to put posters up in store windows, give donations, or what ever we can do to show support the same as we did for our boys high school basketball team!!

Good Luck Girls and Adair County is PROUD!!!!
