To the editor, CM:

The name for "Ella,", most commonly used in the late '40's and early '50''s when I rode the school bus from "The Millerfields" to Columbia High was: Goodin's Cross Roads.

It is a silent disease meaning you may not show any signs or symptoms until you have a fracture. The disease affects 128,000 Kentucky women and 37,300 Kentucky men. Taking the time to know the risk factors and having an early prevention program can help you decrease your chances of getting the disease as you get older.

Tom Chaney, July 22, 2007: Roma

Of Writers and Their Books. Review: Roma: from salt makers to the Ides of March
By Tom Chaney

Steven Saylor is one of the most interesting writers to come down the pike in the last few years. I found the first of his "Roma Sub Rosa" series by accident one day in The Bookstore. You probably know by now that I am a fan of mystery and detective novels. Historical mysteries have of late intrigued me. Brother Cadfael in a monastery along the Welsh border in the twelfth century; Sister Fidelma, the Irish judge of the seventh century -- books about them and others have provided entertainment as well as great information about life in other times.

New geography question: What is 4th name of Ella, KY?

It is one of those perplexions which race around in the mind of Donald McKinney, not nagging enough to write down, but a bother to him anyway: The fourth name of Ella, KY.

"I can always remember three of them," he says, "and it's a different three everytime. What I can't remember is all four at one time." On Saturday, July, 21, 2007, his fractional epiphany in the IGA parking lot was: "1) Ella, 2) Fairview, and 3) The Crossroads."
