History is made: Gary Coomer is first Dairy Dip customer

2007-07-20 - Foot of Jamestown & Town Hills, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The first person served at the Columbia Dairy Dip when it opened was Gary Coomer, of Bennett Ridge, Columbia, KY. Abbey Miller handed him a snack lunch of cheese stix and a vanilla milk shake promptly at the 10:00am CT opening. The Columbia Diary Dip occupies the same building where the Dairy Queen opened over a half-century ago. It re-opened today with the new name. Mila Newton will manage the business, which is owned. Co-owner Dicky Walker was the fry chef on opening day. Mike Newton, the other co-owner, will be in after jury duty, Mrs. Newton said. The full crew included Steffani Knight and Sheila Wilson. Gary Coomer said he's always been fond of soft ice cream. Before he began a 27 year career at Lindsey Wilson, where is is just days short of being the longest tenured person on campus, Coomer worked at the Circle R with the late J.D. Harper, and, later, at the Dairy Chick next door, a soft ice cream stand owned by Harper and the late Warren Webb. A favorite at the store is Dicky Walker's re-creation of the famous Merle "Pete" Reed chili dog. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sue Stivers order one, and prounounced the same, only better.
