Letter: Gardener as lovely as the flowers she grows To the editor, CM: I would like to say I have also had the honor to admire the lovely plants that Ruby Smith grows in her yard. But the cactus in the front I think is gone and replaced with another wonderful flower bed. I only know her as a friend from her job, but would like to add she is the same lovely person as the flowers she grows--always helpful and with a smile for everyone. s/Patty GreenRelated letter Photo Ruby Smith's Hibiscus 2007-07-19 14:11:46 | Comments | Printable version

Feedback: Ruby Smith has a way with flowers To the editor, CM: Ruby Smith has always had a way with flowers and anything that grows. As a child I stayed with them often and I remember all the flowers inside the house and out. I love her cactus in the front yard. I have not been down Tutt Street in a while I have to drive over and see if the cactus are still there as well. s/Shamarie Claiborne Isn't it great that this heavily travelled residential State Highway has some of the finest gardeners in town? It's great they can see the beauty Ruby Smith creates. -CM Related: Dinner plate sized hibiscus 2007-07-19 13:35:12 | Comments | Printable version

Rebecca Grant sends good hex for pesky raccoons To the editor, CM: Though they look adorable those pesky raccoons can reek havoc. They ate all our corn in the garden last year. I have a friend who lives on Lake Cumberland who told me his secret for dealing with raccoons. Seems they don't like bleach...he pours a small amount in his garbage can and around it. His wife used it around her flower containers also. They still come around but don't mess in the bleach treated areas.
