Historic Adair: Everything happened there, at the Coburg Store

2007-07-17 - Coburg, Adair Co., KY .
Larry Smith, south central historian and noted newsman at FM 92.7, The Wave, received a copy of this photograph from Ann Curtis of the store in the Heskamp family's hometown of Coburg, KY. The barn in the left was owned by her grandfather, Ben Heskamp. Though Mr. Heskamp owned a store in Coburg, it was not this one. That store was torn down, and the lumber was used in the house owned by Lorena Jackson in Cane Valley. The store above is no longer in existence, but it was a grand place. Thanks to Anne in California for this photo.Larry Smith wrote, "Thanks to Anne in California for this photo of the Co-burg Store and Post Office. It was made in the 40's and is another reminder ofdays gone by. This old store was torned down in the 90s."

Ann Curtis' cousin, Cassie Heskamp Burrows, has written an eloquent memory about the town of Coburg, which included an excerpt about the store reads: "Various local family members ambled by to pick up their mail at the Coburg Store and Post Office. Everything happened there -- buying gasoline, postage stamps, penny candy, a Coke or Orange NEHI. It was possible to purchase a pocket knife, yard goods, brogans, bib overalls, a jumbo or 'pickled dog' sandwich, or coal oil. Many locals passed the time on the store porch, socializing, whittling, and spitting tobacco juice. Names of the store owners through the years stick in my mind: Mr. Eugene Biggs and Mrs. Annie Whitney, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Breeding, and Otley and Marie Gilpin."

The complete story is "COBURG: Thoughts from a Child of the Depression".

Feedback: On helping parents, children in UK Children's Hospital

Feedback: On helping parents, children in UK Children's Hospital

Hi, Linda

I am Sally Markle's daughter. I wanted to comment on the article on helping the UK children's hospital. My daughter has also been a patient there, having chemotherapy for 15 months, starting when she was 18 months old.

I wanted to let you all know that we have a ministry up and going here in Versailles to help. We've done the ground work with Child Life, the Chaplaincy and with the children's hospital administration. Through our church, St. Andrews Anglican church, we have been collecting food to help feed the families who are stuck at the hospital for days and weeks at a time.

UK nurse comments on ATVs, kids, crashes, & consequences

Allowing unsupervised kids to ride 4-wheelers near public roads is recipe for disaster
By Mary Keltner, RN

A recent article about young children suffering unthinkable injuries in a 4-wheeler accident brings home, again, the importance of keeping small children off motorized vehicles, especially if they are unsupervised, and more especially if they are near public roads.

Allowing this behavior is a recipe for disaster.

Remembering: Duane Wilkinson Haley

To the editor, CM:

I am so sad to hear that my high school friend died. Seeing the notice in CM reminded me of so many good times we shared as classmates at ACHS. We graduated in 1959 and seldom saw each other afterward, but memories of the fun we shared will remain with me always. I know she continued to touch many lives as an educator. May God bless her family and friends.

Rosenbaum confused about purpose of reviews, writer says

Question of need for more shopping centers best left to thinkers such as Wendell Berry, reply says

By Robert Stone

Mr. Rosenbaum's comments on Tom Chaney's review of Missing Mountains! seems to have confused what Tom believes about the subject, what the writers believe about the subject, and what a review should do.

A review should give the reader a general notion of what to expect if the book is read and that appears to have been done well enough.

Whether we need more shopping centers I will leave to such thinkers as Wendell Berry, who I believe thinks that we do not.
