One-vehicle accident takes life of Marion County man

A one vehicle accident Monday afternoon resulted in the death of a Marion County resident, Leonard T. Riley III, 34, of Finley.

Riley was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Coroner Dick Maraja. The accident occurred approximately three miles west of Lebanon on KY 1195 (Shortline Pike) at 4:20pmET/3:30pmCT, July 16, 2007.

David Rosenbaum takes issue with Tom Chaney review

Writer assails book which grew out of "trip. . . aspiring polymaths took to Knott County."

Mr. Chaney's review of the book on mountaintop removal mining was really a stem winder. He begins with John Prine's "Mr. Peabody's Coal Train Done Hauled it Away," a song written about the Community of Paradise in Muhlenberg County, some 200 miles from the nearest mountain. Not a lot of mountaintop removal in Muhlenberg.

Republicans name Danny Goodin for 1st District Magistrate

Son of late Rev. C.D. and Reeda Burton Goodin picked from a field of six nominees which also included Constable Harold Burton, Charles Shepherd, Steve Moore, Darrell Absher, and Donnie Curry.

Duane Ellen Wilkinson Haley, educator, dies in Ohio

The sad word has reached us of the death of Duane Ellen Wilkinson Haley, 65, in Ohio, at around noon, today, Monday, July 16, 2007. She was a native of Glens Fork, KY, and the daughter of the late Arlis and Mary Ellen Aaron Wilkinson. She attended public schools in Adair County. She had retired after a career as a teacher in the Centerville, Ohio school system. Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral will be in charge of local arrangements. Louis McQueary said that further details may be available tomorrow morning.

Amanda Marie Scott, Joshua Donald Friend, exchange vows

Amanda Marie Scott and Joshua Donald Friend were married on June 2, 2007 at Raceland First Assembly of God, Raceland Ky, by Pastor James E. Wells.

Parents of the bride are Marvin and Ruth (Jackson) Scott of Greenup, Ky and Harry and Kathy Scott of Ashland, Ky. Brides grandparents are Rev. Victor and Joyce Jackson of Greenup, KY.

The bride's mother is a 1976 graduate of Adair County High School.

CU hosts 1st wedding/car show event at July 4th celebration

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Summers chose to renew their wedding vows in an outdoor ceremony in front of Campbellsville University during the July 4th car show.

Gary said that his wife Connie wanted to have the special ceremony to mark their 25th anniversary. As they began to plan it, excitement about the annual holiday car show on the campus of CU made them think about the possibility of enjoying both events together.

Rogers Secures $580,000 to go after meth labs

U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) announced today that $580,000 is slated to fund technology that tracks ingredients used to produce methamphetamines. The funding measure passed a key House Committee and the money will go to the Commonwealth's Office of Drug Control Policy to be used across Kentucky, once the measure is signed into law.

Four wheeler accident results in injuries to two minor riders

Adair County Deputy Sheriff Michael Burton is continuing an investigation into an collision involving a 4-wheeler and a 2000 Dodge truck on Clear Springs Road, which resulted in riders on the 4-wheeler, both minors, being taken to Westlake Regional Hospital for treatment.

The 4-wheeler passenger, a 10-year-old minor girl, was flown from WRH to Children's Hospital in Louisville, where she was in critical condition on Sunday, Deputy Burton said.

The Adair County Road Department will be working on the Short Creek Bridge on the Dunnville Road.Remember the road is closed at the bridge.

ACRD mowing crews will be working on the Spruce Pines Road and the Little Cake Road in District 1.

Knifley AVFD contains fire at Underwood home

Clementsville provides mutual aid for two and one half hour blaze

The Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department responded to an alarm of a house on fire at 2:36am on Monday, July 16, 2007 at 1571 Caldwell Ridge Road of Knifley.

The home belonged to Lori Underwood. The fire was mostly contained to the bathroom where the fire appeared to have started at the breaker box, while the remainder of the house received extensive smoke damage.

Good morning! I wanted to let you know that I, Ruth Smith, employee at Lindsey Wilson College, won the $2000.00 at the Adair County Fair. Not one of the other Ruth Smiths. I really couldn't believe I could be that lucky, but I was. I am so thankful because it is just in time for school shopping and one last trip for the summer to Lone Valley Campground with my husband David Michael and two daughters, Hallie and Madelyn.

Knifley Fire Department membership dues are due and payable

Knifley Fire Department membership dues are now due and payable. Fire dues are $25.00 per county tax bill. Dues can be mailed to KAVFD, 6130 Elkhorn Road, Knifley, KY 42753 or dropped off at any of the country stores in the area as well payed to any Knifley firefighter. Jerry Anderson, originally from Bearwallow Ridge in Cumberland County, is charged in the December 2005 murder of Adair Countian Emily Griffitt Anderson while the couple resided at Sawmills, NC.

July 31 is deadline to apply for KY elk hunt

In 1997, Kentucky super-sized its big game opportunities with the introduction of free-ranging elk in the eastern end of the state. Kentuckys elk program has since been a smashing success among hunters seeking their own trophy of a lifetime.

Records have fallen nearly every year since elk hunting begin in 2001, thanks to an aging herd and restrictions on the number of animals taken. Because Kentuckys elk herd continues to grow at a healthy rate its already the largest elk herd found east of the Mississippi River the hunter success rate has exceeded 90 percent every year.
