Fire destroys shop building Thursday afternoon

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a call of a shop building on fire at 3:58pm, on Thursday July 12, 2007, at 9 Bramblett Street in Columbia, off of Campbellsville Street.

The shop building belonged to Andy Withers and was a total loss, the cause in under investigation and there were 16 firemen on the scene for an hour and fifteen minutes.
(PSA) Adair County Fire Dept. dues are payable for July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.Fire dues for the Adair County Fire Department run from July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2008 and are now due and payable. Send to PO Box 96, Columbia, KY 42728, or drop off in our drop box on the side of the fire station on Merchant Street in Columbia, or pay to any firemen. Billy Burdette, 88, Adair native, dies in Jamestown

Mr. Burdette was a member of a old line Adair County family and former Mayor of the City of Jamestown, KY. He had been the owner of a major Russell County automobile dealership and had risen to the presidency of the Bank of Jamestown. He was a member of Jamestown Baptist Church, a WWII veteran, and a Mason.

William J. "Billy" Burdette, 134 Adams St, Jamestown, KY, prominent retired Jamestown banker, businessman, and Russell County civic leader died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at 12:20pm CT.

The funeral service will be at Jamestown First Baptist Church, on Friday, July 13, 2007, at 11:00am CT, with Bro. Thurman Harris and Dr. Phil Ellis officiating.

Two Adair Co. softball teams will compete in State Tournaments

Adair Bandits play best two of three for State Championship on July 21 in Columbia! A C Flame, 13-14 year olds, play July 14 in Paintsville. Adair and Adair-Clinton teams' rosters below.

The local area will be represented by two Little League girls all-star teams playing in the Kentucky State Softball tournament this month. The 13-14 years old A C Flame and the 15-16 years old Adair Bandits will take the field representing the Fifth District. Both teams received automatic bids to play other district winners throughout the state<

Note reminds of need to record history as it happens

Doug McCammish wanted to know if any can send CM a 'before' photo of the Arnold Farm, before the cut for the Western Bypass was made? He had enjoyed watching Dr. Arnold's horses play

A letter just received from Doug McCammish reminds us of how much photographs will help us remember what we are gaining and what we are losing today.

When the photo of the cut across the Dr. Ben Arnold was posted, he wrote, "Thanks for the photo, Ed. If anyone has a 'before,' picture of this scene, I wish they would send it to ColumbiaMagazine. I've really enjoyed watching Ben Arnold's horses play in that field in the past. - Doug."

CU Lady Tigers exchange cultural experiences in Zambia, Africa

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University's Lady Tigers got to experience first-hand servant leadership as they worked with literacy and basketball skills in Zambia recently.

Four members of the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers basketball team: Kristi Ensminger of Kingston Springs, Tenn., Juliana Brown of Antioch, Tenn., Maranda Wilkinson of Belvidere, TN, and Shabree Hunter of Lake Worth, Fla., along with former Lady Tigers coach Donna Wise and her husband, George, Joanna Turpin, a Campbellsville native and student at the University of Kentucky, and Connie Alden of Titusville, FL, spent May 5-19 in Zambia (formerly Rhodesia) and Cape Town, Africa.

Rogers gets $54 million for ongoing repairs at Wolf Creek Dam

U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) announced today, July 12, 2007, that he has secured $54 million for continued repairs at Wolf Creek Dam which will address seepage and lead to a more stable lake level once the project is completed. The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2008 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill, which the House Appropriations Committee approved today.

Emily Anderson murder: Jury begins deliberations, station says

A story posted at 11:32amET/10:32amCT, is on WCNC.com said Jerry Anderson's case is now in the hands of jurors. "Jury begins deliberations for Anderson case"is by Mark Boone/WCNC.com.

Anderson faces a possible death sentence if convicted of the charge of murdering his wife, Adair Countian Emily Griffitt, in December 2005. Deliberations are in Gastonia, NC.

Obituary: Lawrence Compton, 84, WWII veteran

Mr. Compton served for four years in Europe and Africa during World War II. He had moved to Illiinois to find work during The Migration. He had retired after 41 years in a leadership position, all with the same company there. He was the head of a large, respected family with deep roots in Southwestern Adair County, where his final resting place will be.
Lawrence Nell Compton, 84, Bridgeview, IL, formerly of Gradyville, KY, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at his home.

The funeral service will be Monday, July 16, 2007, at 11:00am CT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, with Bro. Elbert Hadley and Bro. Thomas Hill the officiating clergy.

Obituary: Ralph Willan, 81, Marine veteran of WWII

Mr. Willan served in both the European and Pacific Theaters in World War II; he will be accorded military rites by VFW Post 6097.

Ralph Willan, 81, LaGrange, KY, formerly of Columbian, KY, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 8:25am at the Baptist East Hospital after an illness.

The funeral srvice will be Friday, July 13, at 1:00pm at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, Columbia, KY with Rev. David Alexander the officiating clergy.
