Obituaries: Kelly, 34, & Teresa, 33, Gibbons

Motorcycle accident victims will be buried at Tarter's Chapel Cemetery in Adair County

Steve Kelly Gibbons, 34, and his wife, Teresa Michell Gibbons, 33, of Edmonton, KY, died Friday, July 6, 2007, in a motorcycle accident near Edmonton.

Steve Kelly was the son of Dianne and Jimmy Gibson of Edmonton, KY and was employed by J&J Trucking. Teresa Michell was the daughter of Randall and Sherry Coleen Burris of Columbia, KY, and was employed at Carhartt in Edmonton, KY.

Aquatic nuisance plant found in Cumberland below WCD dam

Unwanted Canadian invader fouls lures; state wildlife experts don't want it to spread.

The aquatic nuisance plant Didymosphenia geminata, commonly referred to as didymo, is now in the Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam.

"I found it at Rainbow Run," said Dave Dreves, fisheries research biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We've heard reports from all over the river." Rainbow Run is approximately 12 miles downstream of Wolf Creek Dam.

Feedback: Saying prayers for Jaremy

To the editor, CM:

I am originally from Columbia. I now live in Mooresville (Indiana). I still have lots of family there.

I will be praying fro Jaremy. It know that prayer works. My God is in control of this Big Universe.

I put my complete faith and trust in God. I will pray and I will put him on our prayer list at Church.

Let's all keep praying and believing. God remembers. All good things come from Above. God bless and heal Jaremy.

Emily Griffitt Anderson murder: Defense testimony begins

Links to two stories on Friday, July 6, 2007 defense testimony
The defense is disputing the time of the death of Emily Griffitt Anderson, a story posted this morning, based on the first day of defense testimony, says. Emily Griffitt Anderson, who grew up in Columbia, KY, and was a recent employee here and recent resident of Cane Valley, was reported missing on December 29, 2005 from her Sawmills, NC home.

Her body was found six days later in South Carolina. Her husband, Jerry Anderson, originally from Bearwallow Ridge in Cumberland County, is facing a possible death penalty if convicted. He is on trial in Gastonia, NC.

Jim Kelly to continue service on KSP Personnel board

(Commonwealth News Service)--Governor Ernie Fletcher has reappointed Jim D. Kelly, of the Johnson County community of Flat Gap, to the State Police Personnel Board.

Kelly retired in January after 40 years with the U.S. Social Security Administration. He received a bachelor's degree in business economics from Morehead State University. Kelly is president of the Big Sandy Area Development District Council on Aging and treasurer of Sandy Valley Transportation. He is vice president of the Johnson County Senior Citizens Center and vice chairman of the East Kentucky Leadership Foundation. He is a member of the Paintsville/Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, the Van Lear Historical Society and the East Kentucky Veterans Coalition for Better Health Care. He is married to Mary Jo Kelly.

The State Police Personnel Board administers the employment fitness examinations of cadet trooper applicants and establishes a list of potential officers resulting from the applicants' exam performance. The board is made up of the Kentucky State Police commissioner and four other members appointed by the Governor, representing each of the two major political parties.

Taylor Burton crowned Miss Pre-teen Hart County Fair

Congratulations to Taylor Michelle Ryan Burton of Columbia she was crowned Miss Pre-teen Hart County Fair 2007 on Tuesday July 3, 2007.

Taylor is the ten year old daughter of Janet Huckaby and Michael Burton.

Taylor will represent Hart County in October for Miss Pre-teen Kentucky.

Sgt. Hancock says things have gotten intense in Iraq

Adair soldier returns to States in seven weeks; "can't wait to see Columbia again"

BAGHDAD, IRAQ--Hello Columbia and Adair County. I'm writing from Baghdad, Iraq.Things have gotten kind of intense around here lately. We have had three uparmored guntrucks lost to explosions from roadside bombs in the last two weeks, but after some intense patrolling we have ridden that area of our patrol route of insurgents.

Nobody was killed, but a few were wounded from the blast.

Adair 9-10 year olds win first game of 5th District LL Tourney here

The 5th district little league tournament began Friday night, July 6, 2007, at at Joe Johnson Little League Park.It was a wonderful evening, with large crowds, hometown pride in our new park additions, and pride in being able to showcase Columbia as hosts of an important Little League Event.

It was capped by a victory for the Adair County 9-10 year olds.

The 9-10 year olds beat Marion County in a 2-1 victory, in the first round of play.

The team will play again on Saturday night at 8:00p.m.

The team is coached by Chad Bivens, Mark Hutchison, and Dennis Yates.

Two escape from Marion County Adjustment Center

At 5:40pmET/4:40pmCT Kentucky State Police was notified that two individuals escaped from the Marion County Adjustment Center in St. Mary's, KY.They are:
  • Billy Ray Neal, a white male age 27, is 6 ft. tall, 150 lbs., hazel eyes, blond hair, and has several tattoos on his body. He was held for arson and burglary

  • Michael Stanley Katzman, is a white male age 26, is 5 ft. 9 inches tall, weighs 180 lbs., has blue eyes, brown hair, and has several tattoos on his body. He was held for burglary and forgery charges
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of these two individuals is asked to contact Kentucky State Police at 800-22-5555.

Water board meetings delayed for one week

Two board meetings are being delayed for one week:
  • The Columbia/Adair County Water Commission regular monthly meeting has been changed from July 12 to July 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the office of the Adair County Water District.

  • The Adair County Water District regular monthly meeting has been changed from July 12 to July 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Adair County Water District office.
The changes are being made in the events calendar.
