Adair Countians at International Technology conference

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) recently held its National Educating Computing Conference (NECC) in Atlanta, Georgia. NECC is the largest educational technology conference in the world and had more than 17,000 people in attendance from across the United States and several from other countries.

Kyle Loy, an Adair County High School Senior, was one of those in attendance. Kyle was selected as one of eight Kentucky Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) engineers to provide technical support at the conference.

HERE'S HOPING YOU HAD A JOYOUS HOLIDAY WITH PLENTY OF FIREWORKS. These color bursts could be seen behind Begley Chapel on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College. Hundreds of people, perhaps thousands, came out to watch the annual July 4th fireworks show at the Adair County Fairgrounds.

4th of July Essay: Empty Boots have special meaning

A visit to the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Frankfort and the sight of the Empty Boots at its entrance brought back a flood of memories for a veteran who knows too well just what the symbol means, and inspired him to share recollections of the war, the four fine men it took from our community, whose names are inscribed there, and his thoughts for this Fourth of July

l learned that I would need to go to Frankfort Saturday morning, June 30, to pick up my Mother at my sisters. I decided that because it was so close to Independence Day, it would be a fitting time to visit the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

GRAWL meeting re-scheduled for July 10, 2007

The Green River Animal League meeting normally scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month was cancelled because of the Fourth of July holiday. Susan Rarey sends word that the meeting will be next Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 7:00pm CT.

The Green River Animal Welfare League, GRAWL, holds regular monthly meetings the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the basement of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce building, SE corner Burkesville and Fortune Streets. Plenty of parking in back of building by lower entrance and in city parking lot on Fortune ST. All participation is welcome. -Shantilla Rexroat, D.V.M., President.

Diabetes classes at Health Dept., Thursdays, noon-2pm

Also, one evening class scheduled on Monday, August 6, 2007

Diabetes self-management classes will be held at the Adair County Health Department from 12 noon to 2pm CT on the following Thursdays: July 12, July 19, August 9, and August 16.

Additionally, an evening class will be offered at the health department on Monday, August 6, 2007, from 4:30pm to 5:30pm CT.

4th of July Celebrations underway

  • Huge fireworks display at Adair County Fairgrounds tonight

  • It's the Fourth of July, with anticipation growing for the Fourth celebration at the Adair County Fairgrounds tonight, which includes concerts starting at 6:00pm, after which the huge Fireworks display will take place. Hundreds of cars will complete for prime parking spots above the fairgrounds, and many will set up tailgate parties and hunt for the best vantage points to set up lawn chairs and coolers on LIndsey Hill and in the Young Addition. Thousands will enjoy the event, which is sponsored by the Jaycees, Adair County Fiscal Court, and the City of Columbia.

    5th District Little League Baseball Tournament here July 6-11

    Mr. Johnson will throw out first pitch of tournamentBy Scott Bennett

    One of the biggest sports events of the year begins Friday, July 6, 2007, at Joe Johnson Little League Park. when the 5th District Little League Tournament for 11/12 Year Olds and 9/10 Years starts at Joe Johnson Park, at Industrial Drive in Columbia, KY.

    We are planning to have Mr. Joe Johnson throw out the first pitch of the tournament on Friday night, July 6, 2007, at 6:00pm.

    We are hoping for a large crowd to be in attendance, not only for the games, but to pay tribute to Mr. Johnson and his long history with the program, who will throw out the first pitch of the tournament in the 11/12 year old game between Adair County and Marion County, at 6pm CT.
    This is not only a big sports event, but a wonderful opportunity for us to show off improvements to the park, but also a chance to showcase Adair County hospitality. We expect 3,500 to 4,500 to attend the games. Complete Schedule

    Hobo Kitty to be at ACPL, Tuesday, July 17, 2007

    Children's book author "Animal Gambill" and her cat, Hobo Kitty, will present "A Bow-Wow Blast" at the Adair County Public Library on Tuesday, July 17, at 5pm CT.

    The event features include a book-reading and book-signing of "Riley's Bow-Wow Blast," by "Animal Gambill", and kids will get to meet one of the real-life characters of the author's first book, her cat, Hobo Kitty.>

    Breeding Area VFD now collecting 2007-2008 membership dues

    The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department is now collecting membership dues for 2007-2008 year, July 1, 2007 and goes to June 30, 2008. Membership dues can be mailed to the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department at Post Office Box 5, Breeding, KY 42715. Membership dues can also be paid to any BAVFD firefighter. Dues are $25.00 for first deed and $15.00 per additional deed. Non- Membership runs are $500.00. The Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department provides fire suppression to the South-Western part of Adair County. The district starts at the Highland Raku Studio on High Way South 61 and proceeds to the Cumberland County line, covering both sides of the road. BAVFD protects Antioch Church Road, F Burris Road, Weed Sparksville Road, H Richards Road Greenbrier Road and East Big Creek Road. BAVFD protects High Way West 80 from the Louie B. Nunn Parkway Bridge to the Metcalfe County Line. BAVFD protects Flat Rock Road and all adjoining roads to the Metcalfe County Line.     Ratatouille held over at Columbian Theatrer

    Manager, Columbian TheaterThe Columbian Theatre is holding Ratatouille over another week. The G-Rated animated Pixar movie has been getting great reviews in town this week. It plays nightly at 6 and 8pm CT and on Sunday, 2pm and 4pm CT.

    Next week, starting Friday June 13, 2007, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. There will be a special midnight showing of Harry Potter.

    There will be a special midnight showing of Harry Potter next Thursday, June 12.

    The Columbian's Party Room will be only $35 plus $4.00 per person and includes the price of ticket and a small drink and small popcorn.
