Rep. Rogers secures $500,000 for tourism promotion U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation that will provide $500,000 in funding for Southern and Eastern Kentucky's Tourism Development Association, SEKTDA, which includes Adair County. Adair County's Sue Stivers serves on SEKTDA's Board of Directors, and Vonnie Kolbenschlag, Columbia, is on the 2007 Advisory Board. Garden Club: Dishing the dirt from the Garden Club "You know you're a red-neck when you cut and bale your yard for hay."-JEFF FOXWORTHY By Barbara Armitage When we moved to Columbia two years ago we did exactly that baled the yard for hay. The mere thought of hosting a Garden Club meeting at our old house out on Bull Run Road would have caused me to dig a hole and climb in. The gathering today, Thursday, June 28, 2007, of some of the area's most enthusiastic gardeners made me pause and look back over the changes in the yard. Obituary: Columbia native Roberta Butler Wettle dies in Ohio Mrs. Wettle was the co-founder of Wettle's Canvas Awnings, which is still owned and operated by the family. Roberta F. Wettle, 93, of Toledo OH, died Friday, June 22, 2007 in Sunset Village, Sylvania, OH.Visitation was Monday, June 25, 2007 and a Mass of Christian Burial was held at Blessed Sacrament Church Tuesday, June 26, 2007, with the Reverend Pastor Martin Donnelly presiding. Internment followed at Calvary Cemetery, Toledo OH. Memorial contributions can be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, 4227 Bellevue Road, Toledo OH 43613. Roberta (Robbie) was born September 25, 1913, to Ed & Florence (Coakley) Butler in Columbia KY. The Ed Butler farm was located not far from the Butler Family Cemetery. One employee is taking one of the Mack Trucks back to Somerset for a recall. Tom Brock is picking up guardrails. Secretary Nighbert to visit Scott Hill, Neat Hollow Road Emergency funds are needed to fix dangerous situation on Ray Scott Hill; funds needed to blacktop a one-mile, little known jewel of a road, CR 1029. "a nice shortcut," Judge Melton calls it. A trip to try to speed up KY 55 South Bridge will be worked in, too. By Ed Waggener Judge Executive Ann Melton has received confirmation that Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert is scheduled be in Columbia on Monday, July 16, 2007, for a drive around Adair County to inspect ugent highway needs. At the top of the list is assistance to widen a dangerous curve on CR 1702, Scott Hill Road, on a stretch better known as Ray Scott Hill. "There is a lot of logging going on there," Judge Melton said, "and it's not safe for cars when they meet trucks loaded with logs on the hill." Adair May 2007 unemployment best in LCADD 10 county LCADD chart with this story Adair County's unemployment improved in May 2007, the latest data available from Kentucky Education Cabinet, with 5.6% on the unemployment rolls, down from 6.0% from the previous month. The 2007 rate was up 0.1% from the May 2006 figures. The 5.6% rate was third best in the Lake Cumberland Area Development District, and was very close to Clinton County's 5.2% and almost identical to the rate in neighboring Taylor County (5.5%). Jerry Anderson, originally from Bearwallow Ridge in Cumberland County, is on trial in Gastonia, NC, for the December 2005 murder of his wife, Adair Countian Emily Griffitt, recently a resident of Cane Valley, KY. Testimony in the case resumes this morning, Thursday, June 28, 2007, at 9:30amET/8:30amCT. A relatively brief account of the Wednesday, June 27, 2007 testimony in the trial at Gastonia, NC. It tells more than words the exact status of construction By Ed Waggener With a single photo taken from 24,000 feet, about the same distance straight up as it is on the ground from the KY 55/KY 706 Y to Old Zion, Columbia Pilot and catfish restauranteur Doug Campbell has answered a lot of questions on everybody's mind about the Western Bypass around Columbia. The photo accompanying this story was received overnight and was picked as the best among six sent. Campbell, besides being a commercial pilot, also owns catfish outlets and personally runs the one in Columbia, now badged "Catfish Plus," and so, prefaced his letter by saying, "If I'm not frying something, I'm flying something."
