Jason Harmon: On Putnam vs. Putman

"Putman" and "Camel" both have their roots in misspellings following mispronunciations. How the area name(s) came to be; how the Campbell name was also altered at times

By Jason Harmon

Actually Tennessee's Putnam County lent it's name to the Adair County Putnam/Putman Community. I have always assumed that over the course of 140 Years the local dialect has changed the name from Putnam to Putman.

During the Civil War, to avoid Confederate sympathies in Tennessee, the family of William Pickett Campbell migrated from Putnam County, TN to this particular area of Adair County.

During the next years more members and extended family members joined their cousins in Adair County.

Feedback: An explanation of Strange Goings On over Plum Point

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am originally from Columbia, and keep in touch with whats going on by checking out your magazine weekly.
I came across the photo of the two aircraft over the skies of Columbia. Currently I work for the Air Force as a civilian, and I work on the two types of aircraft in the photo.

You are correct in the assumption that it is an In-flight refueling mission.

By Elaine Bennett

A town more than just a little like Columbia, Adair County, KY, needs some answers:

Will Sis Bertha keep the town straight? Will Red join the band? Will Prudence be a success with her new business? Will Peg find a new husband? Will cousin Mooney show up?

The answers to these and other unimportant questions will be made known at the The Dream Depot 106 Jamestown St, Columbia, KY, when the musical play, "Oldies But Goodies" debuts at the Dream Depot this Saturday, June 30, 2007, with a repeat performance on July 7, 2007.

Blessing of the Animals: Link to story

Animals went were blessed by Rev. Cathy Cook, the pastor of "The Church Without Walls," yesterday, June 24, at the Catawba, NC, Animal Shelter. The story may seem very familiar to anyone who's watched the British sitcom, "The Vicar of Dibley," when Pastor Geraldine Granger blessed the animals inside the St. Barnabas Church in Dibley church, to the dismay of Parish Council stiffneck David Horton.

KET doesn't carry "The Vicar of Dibley," the second best British sit-com, (to "Last of the Summer Wine)" opting instead for the dud "Are You Being Served," and the show which could be loved were it not for the star character, "Keeping Up Appearances," and Jublileeing viewers to death. To read about the North Carolina blessing of the animals, "Animal blessings: Pet owners, shelter animals receive prayers from pastor", by Kim Gilliland, Monday, June 25, 2007, Hickory Record.
