Additional names have been added today, including those from two letters received in the last two hours. New family breakouts are being added, including one for the Jones family, with nine names, including that of classmate of ACHS 1958, Clayton Jones, the first member the class lost

By Ed Waggener

The number of names in "Honoring Adair County Veterans who have served our country," continues to grow.

Again, we really appreciate corrections for any reason. Additions are welcome, and we appreciate the special notes many of you have sent.

Store at Portland, Adair County, Kentucky

2007-06-24 - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper.
Garnett Kessler & Son Store at Portland, Adair County, KY, was 50 years old in 2006. The store is one of the most photographed landmarks in Adair County, but this picture, by Betty Sue Jasper, is considered the most beautiful photographic rendering of the famous site. The business is located 12 miles from Columbia, KY. It was founded in 1956 by Garnett Baker, who was the proprietor for seven years and who still owns the building. Country food and country store sandwiches are served by Garnett Kessler's wife, Geneva Pickett Kessler. The Kesslers have operated the store for over 43 years. To get there: Take KY 61 north from Columbia, turn left on Milltown Road, go to turn Tarter's Chapel United Methodist Church, turn right on Portland Road. Then drive approximately one mile to 1050 Portland Road.

Feedback: It is Putman, not Putnam County

Tennesseans have it all wrong! Resident corrects a matter of great import to the Putman County community of Adair County, KY

Dear Ed:

I really enjoy reading Jason Harmon's stories about the history of Adair County, particularly Burton Ridge. But one thing I just had to comment on was his spelling and perhaps pronunciation of the community in which I live.

You see it may be "Putnam" in Tennesssee, but here in Kentucky, it's "Putman." Ask anyone who lives here also known as Allen Schoolhouse RD and they will tell you the same.

Adair Veterans List update 6/24/2007

Latest update of "Honoring Adair County Veterans who have served our country." Many more names are being added to ready roll for July 4, 2007

By Ed Waggener

We've received a large number of submissions to add names to the roll, "Adair County Veterans who have served our country," many of which have added little known information.

An account from Richard Hovious tells of two brothers from the Knifley area who were in World War II, and about the day a classmate received word of his brother's death.

Adair Co. Board of Education: Report, June 21, 2007 meeting

Board gives photography bid to Life Touch studios after complaints voice about low bidder. First National gets bank contract Approval of transfer of 14 students from CWC to ACES balances classes. Brenda Mann re-appointed board treasurer. No action on track situation, but board members hope cross country course can be constructed, in-house work can be done to make at home competition possible. Possibility of late fall access via section of bypass
By Ed Waggener

The Adair County Board of Education voted to give the photography contract for elementary and high school photographs after service of the low bidder, Wilderness Studios of Glasgow, was questioned by Principal Patty Jones and others at the meeting.

The contract with Wilderness had been included in the Board's long list of "Consent Agenda" items which usually have very little discussion at the meeting. In the Thursday, June 21, 2007, meeting, 21 of the boards 31 agenda items were in the consent agreement, including everything from approval of the minutes of the May meeting, to really big items such as the awarding of the food service bids for the 2007-2008 school year.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: on The Runaway Rabbit

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
From The Hart County News-Herald, May 22, 2005
By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
SMALL BOOK, BRIEF LIFE, BIG MEANING
When my boys were young I read a lot of books to them. Most of them I dont even remember. One book for small children does stand out in my memory, though. I remember it not because I read it to my oldest son, I recall it because it was the first book he read to me from cover to cover in those early days when he was just becoming fascinated with his ability to decipher the printed word. The book was Runaway Bunny, by Margaret Wise Brown.

Tom Chaney, June 24, 2007: On Kentuckian Edward F. Prichard

Book Review: The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society
By Tom Chaney

ORAL HISTORY--behind the scene
I have never been a member of the Kentucky Historical Society. I'm not bragging. In fact, I am a bit ashamed of the fact. The Society does good works -- too myriad to mention here. Their journal is a great resource for those interested in Kentucky history.

Ann Matera came into The Bookstore on her way from the post office the other day and dropped a 2006 issue of The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society on the round table with some remark that it was too big to read. One reason I haven't joined the society is that she lets me read her copies of The Register.
