Burton Ridge Area: Some real scholarship on the area

Noted authority takes issue with Sinclair, whom he charges with disenfranchisement of many Burtons from their Burton Heritage, a most heinous offense

By Jason Harmon

I've always looked at 206 as the artery of Burton Ridge. The veins being Christine Road, Snake Creek Road, Fairview-Little Cake Rd, etc.To show another opinion, I contacted my dad, Clifton Harmon. Like Mr. Sinclair, he is also a Hopkins Alumnus and has the added bonus of being a member of the first graduating class of Shepherd.

Obituary: Sandy Tucker, co-founder, Galilean Home

The life of a Casey County woman whose inspirational story was known around the world was cut short Monday, when she lost her battle with cancer.

She was known as "Mom" to over 800 children she and her husband have cared for over the years at the Casey County complex near Dunnville, just 30 miles from Columbia, they developed.

She is now mourned by thousands from whom she had gained wide respect. People of all walks of life, from Congressmen, Kentucky Governors, from leaders in every field, and Christians of all levels of society are saddened by the loss of Sandy Tucker.

Sandy Tucker, 62, South Fork Church Road, Liberty, KY, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Feedback: Upper Enders should affiliate with Knifley

re: "A new issue raised - Start end of Burton Ridge"
I keep trying to tell Anthony that he ought to be proud to live at the Knifley end of Burton Ridge, but he insists on lumping hizself in with Mike Roy and Ed Streeval. You'd think someone workin on hiz Masters Degree would have better sense - but then he's majoring in Sy-col-oh-gee so I reckon we have to allow for some abnormal thinking!

Feedback: Fairplayer takes issue with good Burton Ridge word

re: "A new issue raised, Start, end of Burton Ridge"
But may have confessed to shortcomings of Yellow Hammer education as compared to that of the man educated at Hopkins University

To the editor, CM

Was enjoying your article on the debate regarding the geographic boundaries of Burton Ridge until near the end when you use the words,"internecine warfare." They didn't teach us words like that at Yellow Hammer so I looked it up.

Feedback: Goodin's Crossroadatarian says Peewee knows

re: "A new issue raised, Start, end of Burton Ridge"
Studied response received from Sinclairite 2 hrs. 16 minutes after appearing worldwide for first time on CM

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com

Having grown up in the Goodin's Crossroads Community, I know I didn't live on Burton Ridge. My proof is that my mother always told me to "never, ever marry anyone who lives on Burton Ridge." I'm guessing that meant some of the Goodin's Crossroads folk felt a bit superior.

Of course, I didn't honor my mother's wish since I grew up and married Norman (Bouncer) Burton (who died in 1964). He was indeed a resident of Burton Ridge, living very close to Bearwallow UMC.

Letter defines, in psychological terms, the look in a soldier's eyes

It's a defense mechanism, Kenneth Scott learns from this letter from his daughter, Cheryl Holland, who sent this note to him on Tuesday:"I read the article--very nice--in the ColumbiaMagazine. Thanks for giving me credit for the gift. Ernie Pyle was recognizing that the mind "detaches" itself from reality somewhat in situations that are too horrible or stressful to deal with on a day-to-day basis. I have read about this in psychology. It is a defense mechanism that allows us to survive and also not go crazy when we have to do things we would not normally do (like kill other people ) or are so overwhelmed by seeing others killed and/or tortured. It is almost like you are not really there, but watching it from a distance, and it helps to protect you emotionally."

A new issue raised: Start, end of Burton Ridge?

A controversy of this magnitude cries for the wisdom of the late Dr. W.K. Neat

By Ed Waggener

As if the twisty corn, the onion tower issue, and the Farmall-John Deere controversy weren't enough, Anthony Holmes is introducing yet another problem to tax the minds of the Heavy Thinkers in Adair County:

He's dared to ask:
Exactly where does Burton Ridge begin? and where does it end?
Then he unhesitatingly answers, "I always thought it starts at Joe Russell Barbee's House and ends at the top of Dug Hill."

That definition of Burton Ridge at least takes in Holmes' own house in the Nar's, and includes Mayor Frankie Burton's home within its confines, but there are other theories dramatically different.
