Adair Countians in War: Explaining that look in a soldier's eye

There was a haunting look we all saw, and it touched us deeply. But it took another veteran to recognize what had taken place in a life. The photo of a weary Vietnam soldier posted here had haunted another veteran, who had seen that "look" in a soldier's eyes so many, many times during his own combat times in the Korean War. (Sgt) Kenneth Scott commented on it just after it's posting. Then on Father's Day, a gift from his daughter gave him the answer, summed up by an unequalled war correspondent killed in World War II. The events after that follows, along with a brief book review. -ED
By Joe Hare, Black Lion, B Co. 2/28 Inf, 1st Inf Division, 1967
Today, 18 Jun 07 (Sgt) Kenneth Scott brought me a copy of a quote by Ernie Pyle,* a famous war correspondent of WW II, who, according to Wikipedia, was killed 18 Apr 45 in the Pacific Theater, (Sgt) Scott had found it in military book that had recently been a present from his daughter. The quote is below in it entirety.

Double Cola sign brings back memories of soft drinks past

By Larry J. Smith, Program Director,WHVE 92.7 The Wave
With Ed Waggener, editor, CM

A sign on a side road off Ky 90 in Clinton County--or maybe it was Russell--caught my eye the other day.

It was a still very bright Double Cola sign, painted by Greensburg, KY artist Bob Moss. Mr. Moss died in the 1980's, but his signs live on. I want to get photographs of as many of them as possible.

Everybody in this area used to love Double Colas. Hardly anyone in Greensburg drank anything else. The DeSpain family bottled the drink in their plant, Greensburg Bottling Co., over the footbridge, across the tracks from the historic old square in Greensburg, KY.

Feedback: Technical limits face water tower promoters

Wherein signage brevity, (as espoused by Dr. Phil Aaron and Joe Lynn Barbee) is advocated

To the editor, CM

Well, OC and all the others commenting on the water tank signage should take a drive: Entering the LBN Parkway at exit 48 (State Police Post) and go west to exit 46. Then continue North on Hwy 61 and take a good look at the water tower as they come over the hill.

Now think hard about how much lettering can be put on the tank that the average, half-blind person like myself, would be able to read from that location.I really don't believe very much writing is going to show up very well.

Feedback: Support for idea from Richard Phelps

To the editor, CM:

I think Richard Phelp's suggestion is more positive, as well as being the accepted slogan, than what is shown on the City of Columbia website: WE ARE LOOKING BACK TO FORGE AHEAD - written in capital letters following the lower case letter text telling about Columbia.

To me "looking back" is very similar to "looking backward" which is not positive or visionary. The large caps make it seem as if we are shouting to try to explain to people what we are doing. This gives adefensive tone to it

Does this impress people?
